Peepin' Foes: Pittsburgh Penguins

The Rangers kick off their 2009-10 season Friday night in Pittsburgh at 7:30 on MSG. I figured I would get a jump on things and put this out today, and the PF for the Sens on Friday.

Where We Are: Taking the first step on a quest for the Cup. We know the road is tough and fraught with danger but the prize is well worth it: a place in history.

Where They Are: Celebrating their place in history. Bastards. The Penguins will raise their Stanley Cup banner before the game - rubbing it in our faces. Seeing that smile from Cindy ... *shudder* I still fully believe that if Mike Babcock kept Justin Abdelkader in the Finals rather than putting back in a banged-up Kris Draper, the Cup would be in Detroit. The series was that close that the spark from one player could have swung it the other way. As is, Nik Lidstrom had a chance to force overtime in Game 7 but shanked the shot. The youthful legs of Afrogator were such a spark in the first two games ... but yeah, the Penguins. They will be breaking in some new players - youngster Chris Bourque (Ryan's brother and Ray's other son), geezer Jay McKee and obnoxious Mike Rupp (yep, the former Jersey thug).

Who To Watch For: Crosby, Malkin, blah blah blah. I have a hunch Kunitz can top 30 goals with a full season alongside Sid, maybe even 40. If Rob Brown can get 49 with Mario ... Looking past the stars, look at the defense and see how that unit fares without the pillars that were Long Island's own Rob Scuderi and the U.S.S. Hal Gill.

What To Watch For: What kind of start the Rangers get. After suffering through the slap in the face that is watching the banner raising, they then have a game to play. And there is a lot of other things to keep an eye on: See if they buy into Torts all-offense-all-the-time mentality. See if Michal Rozsival is as bad a player now as he was in the preseason. See if Marian Gaborik can make it through a whole game without getting hurt. See if the lack of a legit checking line will cost the Rangers badly. See how long the Rangers can hold onto the puck as Cindy and company have the speed to take advantage of any and all turnovers. See if Torts melts down and loses the game for the team, like he did the series in Washington. Bitter much? Yes I am.

What We'll (Hopefully) See: A statement from the Rangers - a lotta shots going on net while keeping the Pens penned in their own zone. Relentless forechecking. Few odd-man rushes bursting in on Hank. Oh, and Brashear to ruin Crosby's season before it really starts. That would be nice. I would cheer for that; call me a hypocrite all you like.

Also Check Out: Empty Netters, which is the Pittsburgh Post Gazette's awesome link-happy blog, the snarky photoshop-heavy awesomeness of The PensBlog and SBN's Pensburgh. The funny thing is that looking for the Pensburgh link, I stumbled across this. Hilarity.

10 Reasons Why The Pens' Cup Win Sucks

1 - Validation for Crosby lovers and man, do I hate Crosby lovers. As if the Caps bandwagon wasn't bad enough, this one is getting ridiculous. And Pens fans travel well so most every Eastern team will be stuck with them invading to chant for their boy hero.

2 - Now they will say Crosby's resume is complete, what with a Cup ring and all. Next stop? The Hall of Fame of course!

3 - Did you think all of those intermission features (even when the Pens weren't playing) were nauseating? Be prepared for more! Many, many, many more. Crosby's day with the Cup, Crosby's return to Cole Harbour as a champion, Crosby's first Cup vs. Gretzky's first Cup, Crosby and Malkin vs. Gretzky and Messier, Crosby's impact on ratings and sales, Crosby, Crosby, Crosby! Just shoot me now.

4 - We risk blindness every time Marc-Andre Fleury opens his mouth and unleashes that day-glo smile. It's just not worth it. And for that matter, Flower? The Flower won a Cup. No Mr. Zero, no China Wall, no Saint Patrick, no Dominator ... Flower. Gee wilikers.

5 - Hal Gill, Stanley Cup champion. 'Nuff said.

6 - Four former Islanders were on the Cup-winning roster: Fedotenko, Godard, Guerin and Satan. Seeing any Islander find success makes me feel ill; four of them? Hurl.

7 - On that note, the Pens were terrible and close to moving. They got a few top draft picks for sucking so bad and will get themselves a new building. If this means that the Islanders have another Cup in their future then I'm really going to be sick.

8 - Jordan Staal just got himself a Cup, joining his brother Eric. Now the two can gang up on poor Marc and he needs all the confidence he can get coming into Tortorella's no-defense-from-the-offense system this fall.

9 - Rob Scuderi's work in the Finals was outstanding. And how he will be a unrestricted free agent. If Jeff Finger could get $14 million over four years (and Redden $39 mil over six years), just imagine the payday for a legitimate playoff hero. And the lock out and salary cap were good things, right?

10 - And finally, every time the Rangers play the Pens next season it won't just be New York facing Pittsburgh, it will be the New York Rangers facing "the Stanley Cup defending Pittsburgh Penguins."

Stanley Cup Final Game 2

Don't start talkin' sweep just yet. As Scotty Bowman pointed out, it isn't a series until the home team loses and Detroit didn't lose. Getting good minutes from young, fresh legs, the Wings handled back-to-back games quite well and took a 2-0 lead in the series with a 3-1 win. It also helped that the Penguins hit a couple of posts, got frustrated, stopped forechecking and rarely were able to force Chris Osgood to give up a rebound. Some more notes but no pics, sorry:

*Colin Campbell rescinded the mandatory suspension for Malkin, despite him clearly instigating a fight after a whistle in the final five minutes. Soupy said that "Suspensions are applied under this rule when a team attempts to send a message in the last five minutes by having a player instigate a fight. A suspension could also be applied when a player seeks retribution for a prior incident. neither was the case here and therefore the one game suspension is rescinded." And thus the NHL avoids the likelihood of a second Richard Riot as the series heads to Pittsburgh. Can't have that happen.

*If Osgood keeps playing this well, you can just start engraving his name in the Hall of Fame. Aside from his 389 regular season wins, Ozzy is 10-2 in the Cup Final and holds a 1.47 gaa and .937 save percentage. The OZZY, OZZY chants were ridiculous and rivaled those that I have heard for the other Ozzy, the one that's the Prince of Darkness, who I have seen live about 10 times (and won't go see again, dude is losing it, it's painful to see).

*The roar in the building was remarkable as Michigan's own Justin Abdelkader scored for the second straight game. His first was a fluke fluttering puck on a rebound and this one was a great shot breaking in 1-on-2. While he clearly holds the hometown hero role, Darren Helm is heading for fan favourite with his dogged play. The guy has been a beast all over the ice and in all situations. He also went 22-10 in the faceoff circle with 15 hits over the two wins. Damn.

*There were certainly less Pens fans for this game than there were for two. The building was quite quiet through much of the first period and a half, something that could be tied to the fact that it is Sunday. As my buddy Tom said, beer sales were probably down too.

*No Pens players were brought into the main interview room; coach Bylsma was the only rep to the media. I'm sure they were less than pleased to be heading home in this manner. But, keep in mind, this was how it was last year too. Babcock said that he thinks that this year is "way different" from last and was quick to give his opponents credit - "every inch of ice is a battle out there with them." He also clarified a comment he made earlier that the Canadian press ran with: he said the series has been a battle of two stars (Zetterberg and Malkin) and wanted to make sure that everyone knew he respected Crosby, who is a "classy player who plays hard." No way in the world is this coach going to give the other guys bulletin board material.

*Gordie Howe was signing his book and the fans went wild. He even had his own police bodyguard helping control the crowd in between periods. Sadly, it was quite the contrast to Ted Lindsay, who was very accessible during Game 1.

And that is about that from Detroit. I head to Pittsburgh in the morning! How cool is that?!?

Stanley Cup Final Game 1

Seeing as the Rangers weren't playing, and the game itself was covered by most everyone, I will limit this to some firsthand stuff I saw and experienced. I gotta say, it was one helluva game/night.

*For the first time in my life, I was outright star struck as Stevie Y walked past me after the game. Presidents, mayors, athletes, rock stars ... first time ever. He just has a presence, it was impressive. He had been perched in the press box but no fans were able to get autos or even speak to him before being ushered away. No, I wasn't one of them.

*On the Red Wing legends note, Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay dropped the ceremonial puck. While I didn't see Gordie again until after the game, Terrible Ted was just sitting in the concourse signing copies of his book talking away and taking pictures. A very nice gentleman. I didn't approach Gordie as he was surrounded by people.

*While the fans did get into the game - and released a massive roar when that hometown Abdelkader kid scored - there is no place like the Garden. We were just as loud for our first round game and we chanted more throughout the game. There were many more "Let's Go Pens" chants through the first two periods than there were "Let's Go Red Wings."

*Then again, the in-house entertainment people didn't do all that well to help. And I thought the Garden was bad with the Chelsea club music! It was almost all techno all the time with the rare appearance of Kiss or Kid Rock. That was, until the end of the game when they busted out the 80s mix.

*As for the arena itself, Joe Louis isn't that impressive once you get past the banners. Inside the arena itself, it looks like a red Nassau Coliseum with the same layout and types of seats. Outside of the bowl proper it is like a warehouse. The concourse was dimly lit and the building looks like any of the other thousand of industrial buildings in the area, just with big steps and an octopus on one side.

*Evgeni Malkin's parents were rock stars. They weren't sitting too far from me and during the first intermission they were mobbed by Pens fans. And they entertained every one of them, which was impressive.

*Even more impressive was a jersey I saw - Joel Kwiatkowski. Dude played one game for Pittsburgh. One! I wish I got a pic, dammit.

*A quick game note, which I gotta mention, is that I now officially heart Darren Helm. He is just like Blair Betts, just with more offense. All he does is hustle and play rock solid defensively. And he is probably the fastest skater I've ever seen, even quicker than Rico Fata (remember him?).

*His teammates are just so smooth that it is sickening. Even with Pittbsurgh pestering them, the Wings never seemed to get flustered. They just moved the puck and moved the puck and were quite remarkable as they took Game 1 - and they didn't even play their best!!

*The icing on the cake that was the night was not the result (nyeh nyeh Cindy lost) but with eight minutes left in the game during a break they played the now iconic Stanley Cup commercial on the big board. Total awesomeness.

One down, three to go!

Question Design: The phrasing of questions is critical. Leading or biased questions can produce inaccurate results. Pollsters strive to craft neutral and unbiased questions.

Data Collection: Polls can be conducted through various methods, including phone interviews, online surveys, or in-person interviews. The method chosen can impact the accuracy of the poll.

Data Analysis: Once data is collected, it is analyzed to draw meaningful conclusions. Statistical techniques are used to account for any biases in the sample.

The Impact of Polls on Democracy

Accountability: Polls hold politicians accountable to the electorate. Knowing that their approval ratings are constantly monitored can encourage politicians to be responsive to their constituents.

Voter Engagement: Polls can motivate voters to participate in elections. If a race is close, it may energize more people to vote.

Policy Influence: Public opinion polls can influence policy decisions. Elected officials may adjust their positions or policies based on polling data.

Media Coverage: Polls are often covered extensively by the media, shaping public discourse and informing citizens about the state of the nation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Polling

Are polls always accurate?
No, polls are not infallible. They are based on samples, and errors can occur due to sampling bias, methodology, or unforeseen changes in public sentiment.

What is the margin of error in a poll?
The margin of error reflects the range within which the true population parameter is likely to fall. It is typically expressed as a percentage.

Can polls be manipulated?
Polls can be manipulated through biased question design or selective reporting of results. Reputable polling organizations adhere to strict ethical guidelines to maintain their credibility.

How can I tell if a poll is reliable?
Look for polls conducted by reputable organizations with transparent methodologies. Additionally, consider the sample size, margin of error, and whether the questions are unbiased.

Conclusion

Polls are powerful tools that help shape democracy by informing political campaigns, reflecting public sentiment, and influencing policy decisions. While they are not infallible and should be interpreted with caution, well-conducted polls provide valuable insights into the collective mindset of a nation. As we continue to navigate the complexities of modern society, polls will remain a crucial instrument for understanding and responding to the diverse needs and preferences of the people.

39-28-9: House Of Horrors (now with pictures!)

Well, the Rangers and Pens tied the season series at three each with each team winning all of their home games. Much like the other three games in Pittsburgh, the Blueshirts had no chance at winning this one, being outworked by a more talented team from the start. The usual tough officiating in Pittsburgh didn't help, but wasn't as painful as the two incredibly soft goals Henrik Lundqvist allowed. And the team never made a statement, never finished a big play or made a big hit or anything on their way to skating off the Igloo ice as the losers (again). That's 13 regulation losses in their last 15 games in Pittsburgh (including playoffs).

The Rangers could theoretically go on an eight game losing streak to end the season. Sure, this is only the second in a row and the sky isn't falling yet, but five of the remaining six games are against teams playing better than they are - with the lone possible exception being Montreal.

The new parts that were added around the deadline were nice enough to get some people back on the bandwagon but the chassis is still cracked and the axles are bent. It is up to John Tortorella to keep the wheels from falling off the rest of the way before the playoffs and Monday's match against Mmmmaaaarrrtttyyy at MSG will be quite telling.

More on this one:

*If there was any clearer evidence that the Rangers should re-up Nik Antropov over Nik Zherdev than the third Blueshirt goal I don't know what it is. Sure both players disappear regularly, sure both are skilled, sure both are soft but Borat is bigger and that size is quite helpful up front, as shown by the way he used his length to reach out and spin around Mark Eaton to tuck the puck in.

*Why is it that Joe Micheletti feels the need to be Wade Redden's personal publicist? Micheletti raved on and on about how wonderful Redden was when the Penguin ran into him in the neutral zone and the Rangers were able to go the other way and score. Not mentioned was the pathetic netminding by Fleury to allow the telegraphed wrap-around attempt slide past him. But Redden, wow. Just give that man the Norris NOW!!!!!

*Of course, Micheletti lost track of which defenseman was which on Fedotenko's goal. He said it was Morris who pinched and played himself out of position while it was - who else? - Redden. That left Morris back on a three-on-one and that just didn't work out.

*It wouldn't have even gotten to that had Gomez not tried to use telepathy to get the loose puck in. He let himself be twisted out of the play and his stick taken up so he just watched as it was knocked away. Damn superpowers, always failing at the wrong times.

*Hank gave up his trademark soft goal to open the game, letting the classless, clueless clown Max Talbot slide the puck through his legs. For a goaltender who was so good in shootouts, it is at least the fourth breakaway goal this season that I recall Hank letting in. Then Crosby's later on wasn't much different - blow past the D and wrist it right through the goaltender. For shame Hank, for shame.

*The only shame in the second goal of the game - the Cooke-y Monster's - was that the Rangers let themselves be outworked around their own net. But let's face it, that has been the story all season long.

*How could Colton Orr get beaten up by Eric Godard? He landed maybe two decent punches, and both were to Godard's helmet. Orr has steadily gotten worse since Torts has come to town and that is a shame considering how far he had come.

*As for his game misconduct, what can you say? It was a fair hit on a fair play but Eaton was falling so it became a hit to the head. The refs saw blood so they panicked and felt the need to call something big. Just think of it this way, had that been Crosby instead of Eaton then Orr would have been suspended for life.

*The Freddie Sjostrom on the third line experiment isn't working. He has no chemistry with those guys. It may be time to move him back down to the fourth line or maybe even try him alongside Gomez. Chemistry is the name of the game and the lines as they are now aren't meshing all that well.

*Slightly OT: Last game wrap I mocked the decision to start Valley, saying how Vancouver wouldn't bench Roberto Luongo. Well, they did last night. And they beat the worst team in the West (Colorado) 4-1. Dammit.

*Also slightly OT: My buddy Chuck gave the heads up for anyone interested that Borat Antropov will be doing an autograph signing at the NHL Store in New York on Tuesday at 2pm.

*Nice goal by Cally to get the Rangers on the board. After Avery fumbled the puck, Cally snapped it far post and in past Fleury. The kid has been great for the Rangers and unless they re-sign him quickly (he is a RFA), he is almost assured of getting a offer sheet this offseason. That will be a sad day.

*Sean Avery vs. Tyler Kennedy ... huh? Why? Sean has to be smarter than that. There is no reason to fight a little pest like Kennedy, who wears a visor might I add. Avery needed to goad Crosby, Kunitz or Guerin into something - not a spare part like Kennedy.

*Poor Mike Sauer. Two minutes of ice time, -2. And, frankly, neither of them were his fault; the first one was Paul Mara's screw up as Talbot blew past him and the forwards didn't backcheck well on the second, letting Cooke knock in his own rebound. EDIT: And now Sauer has been sent down as Torts found himself a scapegoat. Nevermind that the kid has played well, but he can't send Redden down now, can he?

*PHW Three Stars
3-Ryan Callahan - one goal.
2-Sidney Crosby - one goal.
1-Ruslan Fedotenko - one goal and two assists.

Scotty Hockey Three Stars
3-Crosby - The Cole Harbour Crybaby bitched, moaned and complained to the refs every chance he got but he did get up from every hit and kept on going to the tough parts of the ice. His goal was more because of the incompetence of the Rangers than everything else but even I have to admit he is fast.
2-Dan Girardi - I wanted to give this to Blair Betts for his work on the kill (which went 10-0!) but Danny G was a force throughout. He skated for more than 31 minutes, 7:44 on them shorthanded. The most telling part of his performance (and that of Staal's) was that Guerin, Kunitz, Malkin, Staal and Sykora were held pointless.
1-Fedotenko - I mention it in most Peepin' Foes (sorry about the lack of one today) but Tank steps up his game every time he plays the Rangers. He did it in Tampa, he did it on the Island and he does it for the Pens. Bastard.

24-14-3: Picking On The Passionless Pens

A couple of weeks ago a friend reminded me that over the course of a season there are teams that you are supposed to beat and you have to be happy when you do, no matter how you went about doing it. I guess that means that we are supposed to be happy after tonight's 4-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins ... he never said it would be easy.

The game was a choppy battle between two teams to see who cared less and Pittsburgh won. The Penguins were horrifically bad, and it is of little wonder that Cole Harbour Crybaby Cindy Crosby is in a frustrated funk. His team sucked. While we were celebrating the two Ranger power play goals, Penguin fans had to be regretting the decision to let Ty Conklin go in the offseason. Both shots - one that was deflected and the other through a smattering of traffic - were intensely savable. Where Marc-Andre Fleury couldn't make the big stop, Henrik Lundqvist made the key save early on - a beautiful kick save on Cindy. After that, the Pens barely challenged him and let him get away with his first shutout of the season. As my buddy Mr. X from the Blue Seats said, it was a terrible game but at least it was entertaining.

What it comes down to is that this Ranger win was a small-but-positive step towards regaining some credibility and some momentum heading into the stretch run. Wednesday's match-up against the Canadiens will be the true test ... but before then, some ice chips from tonight:

*Isn't hockey a wonderful game of inches? I counted five saves by the iron tonight, two of which were behind Hank early in the first period. If either one went in?? Different game.

*If Cindy Crosby had some decent linemates? Different game. He was so much fun to watch - getting kicked out of faceoff circles, making bad passes, crying to the refs, taking bad penalties, diving, getting marginalized by Dmitri Kalinin ... and the Ranger crowd chanting "Crosby Sucks" and "Croooooooossssssssbbbbbbbbyyyyy, Croooooooossssssssbbbbbbbbyyyyy?" Priceless!

*Quick Off Topic Question: Why didn't the linesmen jump in on Crosby's "fight" against Florida's Brett McLean? McLean clearly didn't want to fight and was instantly disadvantaged with the jersey over his head. Oh yeah, that's right, because Cindy gets the benefit of the doubt when it comes to officiating.

*But back to the chants at the Garden on this evening, there were fans near me chanting "MVP" for Nigel Dawes by the end of the game. While I think that was mostly partially drunken exuberance, Dawsie did put together another strong game, as did Petr Prucha. Pru threw his body around with abandon as per usual and made a beautiful play to catch the Pittsburgh defense taking a Gatorade break and found Chris Drury so alone in the slot that even the Ranger captain couldn't miss making it a 3-0 game. The kids are alright.

*Sadly that doesn't include Lauri Koprikoski, who was seemingly scratched for no reason. His replacement Aaron Voros didn't do much bad, but he didn't do much good. Where Prucha came out of the gates after his scratches like a bat outta hell, Voros stepped back on the ice and lumbered around, missed some hits and was generally invisible.

*Also wearing the invisibility cloak was Markus Naslund. The only time that I noticed the former Swedish superstar was in the third period when Max Talbot attempted to provoke him with a few cross checks and jabs. Nazzy is a guy who was supposed to be a key cog in the offense and he seems to be spinning off on his own of late.

*Nik Zherdev on the other hand, seems to be playing himself into oblivion. Every game he makes some move - a quick burst of speed, a sidestep around a defender, a pretty deke, something - that proves that he has the talent. He is just proving the Columbus folks right by showing he doesn't have the desire ...

*Interesting sequence late in the third period: Colton Orr hits Cindy, Brooks Orpik chases after him and gives him a big open ice elbow that Orr shakes off. No call and the play continues so when they came back down the ice again, Orr gives Orpik an elbow and the Penguin defenseman snaps his head back like he was shot. Orr gets a penalty. Then, to top it off, Michal Therrien has nothing better to do than to time the end of the penalty so his goon, Eric Goddard, can be at the door to challenge Orr. Orr then proceeds to go all Joey Kocur on him, delivering haymaker after haymaker to Goddard's helmet. His poor knuckles.

*While Orrsie was in the box, Therrien gambled by pulling Fleury to get a 6-on-4 as his team was down by three goals with three and a half minutes left. It was a ballsie move that backfired as Scott Gomez was finally able to use his speed (and tendency to cherry pick and not play defense) for good to beat everyone down ice and pot the charity shot. Gomez, who got an assist by winning the faceoff to Paul Mara earlier in the game, had a nice effort on paper but in reality was little better than he has been of late. It is so frustrating to see him skate into traffic only to dump the puck into the corner or make a pass that puts his linemate (whoever it is on that given shift) in a poor position. While we can't give up on him, here is a suggestion: the power play would be better served having him as the distributor working from the point rather than on the midboards. He doesn't have Jagr's strength (or vision) and he gets caught in coverage there, dragging down his whole unit.

*It is hard to get a good gauge as to how the Ranger blueline played when their opponents were so bad. The Pens had trouble connecting on passes, passed up on good shooting positions and rarely went hard to the net. I mean, Rozy looked like he continued his slow improvement back into a NHL defender, Marc Staal and Dan Girardi both looked ok, Mara scored, Redden didn't do anything to screw up and Dmitri Kalinin hit the crossbar with a shot.

*And, while Freddie Sjostrom and Blair Betts will never be mistaken for Detroit's Kirk Maltby and Kris Draper, they are proving to be a fantastic penalty killing tandem. If only they could generate a little more offense at regular strength ...

*PHW Three Stars
3-Nigel Dawes - one goal and one assist.
2-Paul Mara - one goal and one assist.
1-Henrik Lundqvist - 27 save shutout.

Scotty Hockey Three Stars
3-Hank - A shutout is a shutout and kudos to the King, even if he ruled over a decimated, punchless foe.
2-Pru - I would say that the way he is playing, Tom Renney couldn't possibly put him back on the bench but the clueless coach has done dumber things so anything goes.
1-Dawsie - Yes, the shot he took on the power play was deflected but his game was so much more than his early goal. He seems to have taken a page from Cally's book and started physically forechecking and it has served him quite well. That, combined with a new willingness to shoot, has resulted in the player we were hoping for last season.

18-8-2: How's The Head Cindy??

Dude! Did you see Marc Staal's utter destruction of Cindy Crosby?? What. A. Hit. I wouldn't be surprised if the Cole Harbour Crybaby sits for a game or two, at least until the little birdies stop circling his head. Okay, maybe not. But it was AWESOME!!

Oh yeah, and the Rangers rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 in a shootout.

Still, that check to Crosby's chest was wonderful to see. The sentiment was unanimous in my section that no matter what the final score was, seeing Cindy get nailed like that would have made the game an utter success. I gotta say though, that win was sweet too. I guess I should talk about it ...

*You knew that the Rangers were playing for a shootout - rather than a win in overtime - when they started the five minute frame with Freddie Sjostrom and Blair Betts across from Gina and Cindy. It isn't what the league had in mind when they made OT 4-on-4 but it was impressive to watch the two Blueshirts shut down the league's top two scorers.

*Staal was the best Ranger defenseman (again). He was physical, his positioning was sound, he looked confident with the puck on his stick and he took a heavy shot on net that Al Iafrate would have been proud of.

*During warmups Hal Gill chatted with Colton Orr (former Boston teammates) across the blueline and soonafter Eric Godard talked it up with Valley. They were certainly setting up the early fight that had the Garden buzzing. While I am often loathe to respect these pre-arranged bouts, it proved to be a helluva fight. Just a week after a pathetic slow dance with Mitch Fritz, Godard opened up and let Orr use his face as a punching bag in one heckuva heavyweight fight. Luckily, the belt stayed with the Blueshirt.

*All credit to Orr for not taking the bait in the first period as Cindy, Brooks Orpik and Matt Cooke all tried to provoke him into doing something stupid. Of course, Tom Renney blew the double minor that Orr drew by putting too many guys on the ice, but the tough guy did his job. He deserved a lot more ice time than the 4:56 that he got. I maintain my belief that he belongs on the power play. The special unit went 0-3 and really struggled, as always. What do you lose by adding his big body?

*Speaking of ice time, Scott Gomez saw an obscene (for a Ranger forward) amount at 24:09 - three minutes more than any other forward. I just don't understand why. Yes, he got assists on both goals (by missing on two shots) - but it wasn't like he was playing especially better than anyone else. In fact, the shifts that got the Rangers going and pressed the action in the early moments of the third period came from the third and fourth lines ...

*It was amazing seeing Z score in the shootout. He seemed to exert absolutely no effort as he backhanded the puck into the upper reaches of the net over the sprawled Sabourin, who really wasn't very good.

*It's time to bring back the Malik in Kalinin. He stunk and allowed Malkin to skate around, through and over him several times throughout the night. Ugh.

*My disgust for Rozy lessened a bit. He was bad the majority of the night, but he made a spectacular defensive play early in the game that actually received a standing O from some fans - myself included. The other waste of money on the blueline, Redden, collected two assists but really was a nonfactor. I truly believe that it is his fault that Dan Girardi's development has stopped.

*The officiating, which should be a nonfactor, was clearly in the Pens corner. Not only did the stripes make a few dubious calls, their positioning was such that they blocked two Ranger clearing passes and broke up a scoring chance. Conspiracy theorists (like myself) don't need more ammunition for the argument that Crosby and company get preferential treatment ...

*An argument broke out around me - who would you rather have on the Rangers, Gina or Cindy? I was shocked that there really much of a debate. Aside from the young, dumb puck bunnies, would anyone pick Cindy at all? Gina is just an incredible hockey player and, if not for Hank's stellar play, would have had a hat trick in this one.

*Somehow the NHL's official event summary has the Penguins making 40 hits but, as Steve in my section pointed out, they didn't seem to make any body contact in the third period or in overtime. The Rangers pressed play and the Pens retreated. Of course, they still got chance after chance, but they weren't the same team physically that they were in the first. The summary had the Rangers with 44 hits with only Hank and Drury not making at least one. I don't know about that ...

*Did anyone see what happened to Tyler Kennedy? He seemed to be all over the ice, pressing the action early and then I didn't notice him in the third period and ot. Pascal Dupuis seemed to step up his play late, but thankfully wasn't skilled enough to change the outcome.

*PHW Three Stars
3-Petr Prucha - one goal.
2-Henrik Lundqvist - 29 saves.
1-Nik Zherdev - one goal in regulation, one goal in the shootout.

Scotty Hockey Three Stars
3-Kris Letang - No Gonchar? No Whitney? No problem. He is listed at six feet but is clearly shorter than that. However, tonight he played like he was Zdeno Chara. Letang made a few hits and was incredibly strong on the boards while still showcasing his stellar offensive skills with crisp passes and a goal in the shootout.
2-Petr Prucha - Gomez said it on the postgame show on MSG - if there was any player that everyone wanted to score, it was Prucha. And he did!!! Despite coming off of a 10 game healthy scratch streak, Prucha played like a man possessed and it paid off. Now can he keep it up? We will find out tomorrow ...
1-Marc Staal - Stay down Cindy. Just stay down.

18-8-2: How's The Head, Cindy? Exploring the Impact of Concussions in Hockey

In the fast-paced world of professional hockey, concussions are an unfortunate reality. Players put their bodies on the line every time they step onto the ice, and head injuries are an inherent risk. The long-term consequences of these injuries underscore the importance of prioritizing player safety and investing in research to better understand and prevent concussions. As Cindy and other players continue to recover and return to the ice, the hockey community remains committed to minimizing the impact of concussions on the game and its athletes.

Peepin' Foes: Pittsburgh Penguins

Rangers are at MSG this evening to host the Pissburgh Penguins at 7pm.

Where We Are: As Inferno at Rangers Review ranted again and again and again, "The worst team in the NHL just picked up 3 of 4 points against us. If not for a gimmicky shootout, we would have picked up only 1 of 4 points against the worst team in the NHL."

Where They Are: The Pens have been alternating wins and losses over the last seven games and are coming off of a 4-1 reaming of the dubious Devils. I went to their win before that, a 5-3 beating of the Isles, and took some good photos that will make it up here one of these days. That game was ridiculous, with Malkin and Crosby deciding they should actually start playing late in the second period and helping their team rattle off five straight goals.

Who To Watch For: Well, the Rangers have a horrible habit in games against Pittsburgh when they are clinging to a one-goal lead or are tied of leaving Crybaby Crosby wide open to score a big goal. Crosby's girlfriend Gina, who is a far better player, has also makes the Rangers look stupid from time to time and is leading the NHL in points (with 39 in 23 games; Crosby is second with 34). Ruslan Fedotenko has stepped up his game every time he has played the Rangers - as a Lightning, as a Islander and as a Penguin.

What To Watch For: The second period. If the Rangers do their usual second period slacking, then no matter how they came out of the first - up a goal or two, down a goal or two - they are probably as good as done because their third period push will be against a team that has made third period comebacks their MO and are quite capable of diffusing the Blueshirts. The overrated Marc Andre-Fleury is out, and Dany Sabourin is a joke of a goaltender (his backup John Curry is far better but less experienced) but the Rangers could easily make him look like a hockey god with 45 easy shots - something they do with opposing goaltenders on a regular basis.

What We'll (Hopefully) See: Godard vs. Orr, Cooke vs. Dubinsky and Staal vs. Staal. Oh yeah, and the Rangers playing like they have a pair.

Title: This Is Not Sour Grapes: Understanding the Nature of Sports Fandom

Introduction

Sports have a unique way of igniting passion and emotions in people. Whether you're a die-hard fan or a casual observer, there's no denying that sports can stir up intense feelings. This article aims to explore the world of sports fandom, addressing the highs and lows, the joys and frustrations, and why it's essential to remember that it's not always about sour grapes.

I. The Joy of Victory

One of the most exhilarating aspects of being a sports fan is celebrating your team's victories. The elation that comes with a last-minute goal, a game-winning shot, or a championship win is unparalleled. These moments of triumph create a deep sense of connection between fans and their teams, forging lifelong bonds.

II. The Agony of Defeat

However, being a sports fan isn't all sunshine and rainbows. Alongside the thrill of victory comes the agony of defeat. Whether it's a heartbreaking loss in the playoffs or a season filled with disappointment, fans often invest their emotions in their teams, making defeats all the more painful.

III. The Emotional Rollercoaster

Sports fandom is a rollercoaster ride of emotions. One week, you're on cloud nine after a dominant win, and the next, you're in the depths of despair following a crushing defeat. This emotional journey is what makes sports so compelling, as fans invest not just in the outcomes but in the players and the stories that unfold.

IV. The Passionate Support

Sports fans are among the most passionate supporters in the world. They paint their faces, wear team jerseys, and chant slogans with unwavering enthusiasm. The passion of sports fans transcends borders and languages, uniting people from diverse backgrounds under a common banner.

V. The Blame Game

When things go wrong for a favorite team, it's not uncommon for fans to seek explanations. Some fans may place blame on referees, coaches, or even opposing players. This is where the concept of "sour grapes" comes into play—when fans deflect their disappointment by attributing a loss to external factors rather than acknowledging their team's shortcomings.

VI. The Importance of Perspective

It's essential for sports fans to maintain perspective. While the highs and lows of sports can be emotionally charged, it's crucial to remember that sports are, at their core, a form of entertainment. Wins and losses are part of the game, and attributing them solely to external factors can diminish the value of competition.

VII. Healthy Fandom

Healthy sports fandom involves celebrating victories, commiserating in defeats, and accepting the outcomes with grace. It's about recognizing that every team faces its challenges and that the true beauty of sports lies in the unpredictability of the results.

VIII. Fandom as Community

Sports fandom extends beyond individual allegiances. It creates communities where people come together to share their passion, engage in friendly banter, and support one another during both good times and bad. This sense of belonging is a fundamental aspect of being a sports fan.

IX. Conclusion

In the world of sports, the line between elation and disappointment is razor-thin. While it's natural to experience frustration when your team doesn't perform as expected, it's crucial to remember that sports are about more than just winning. They're about the moments, the memories, and the camaraderie that come with being a fan. So, the next time you feel tempted to cry "sour grapes" after a loss, take a step back, appreciate the journey, and remember that being a sports fan is about embracing the full spectrum of emotions that the game offers.

Title: "Oh Well...": Embracing Resilience in the Face of Life's Challenges

Introduction

Life is a journey filled with ups and downs, successes and failures, and moments of joy and disappointment. At some point, we all encounter situations where our efforts fall short, our plans go awry, or circumstances simply don't align with our expectations. In these moments, the phrase "Oh well..." can become a powerful reminder of resilience and adaptability. This article explores the significance of "Oh well..." in navigating life's challenges and why it's essential to embrace this mindset.

I. Acknowledging Imperfection

The phrase "Oh well..." often emerges when we confront the imperfections of life. It's a way of acknowledging that things don't always go as planned and that mistakes are a natural part of the human experience. Instead of dwelling on what went wrong, adopting an "Oh well..." attitude allows us to accept imperfection with grace.

II. Letting Go of Perfectionism

Perfectionism can be a double-edged sword. While it can drive us to strive for excellence, it can also lead to excessive self-criticism and anxiety when things don't go perfectly. Embracing "Oh well..." means letting go of the need for perfection and understanding that mistakes and setbacks are opportunities for growth.

III. Resilience in the Face of Failure

Failure is an inevitable part of life. Whether it's a failed project, a rejected job application, or a broken relationship, "Oh well..." encourages us to view failure not as a dead-end but as a stepping stone to future success. It fosters resilience by reminding us that setbacks are temporary and that we can learn and grow from them.

IV. Adapting to Change

Life is dynamic, and change is constant. Sometimes, change can be unsettling or unexpected, leading to feelings of discomfort or resistance. However, the "Oh well..." mindset encourages adaptability. It allows us to accept change, even when it challenges our comfort zones, and to find new opportunities within it.

V. Reducing Stress and Anxiety

Excessive worry and anxiety about things beyond our control can take a toll on our mental and emotional well-being. Embracing an "Oh well..." attitude doesn't mean ignoring problems; it means recognizing when it's time to let go of unnecessary stress and anxiety. It encourages us to focus on what we can change and accept the rest.

VI. Encouraging Self-Compassion

Self-compassion is the practice of treating oneself with kindness and understanding, especially in moments of difficulty. "Oh well..." is a self-compassionate phrase that reminds us to be gentle with ourselves when we make mistakes or face challenges. It's a way of saying, "It's okay, we're only human."

VII. Finding Silver Linings

In many situations, adopting an "Oh well..." attitude can help us discover unexpected silver linings. When we let go of rigid expectations and embrace flexibility, we open ourselves up to new possibilities and unanticipated benefits.

VIII. Embracing Growth and Learning

Life's challenges are not obstacles; they are opportunities for growth and learning. By saying "Oh well..." when things don't go as planned, we can approach setbacks with a growth mindset. We become more open to learning from our experiences and using them to fuel personal development.

IX. Conclusion

In a world that often demands perfection and control, "Oh well..." offers a refreshing perspective. It reminds us that life is imperfect, unpredictable, and full of surprises. Embracing this mindset allows us to navigate the twists and turns of our journey with resilience, adaptability, and self-compassion. So, the next time you face a setback or encounter an unexpected turn of events, remember to say "Oh well..." and see where life's journey takes you.

Title: Any Publicity Is Good Publicity? The Complex Relationship Between Controversy and Public Perception

Introduction

The age-old saying, "Any publicity is good publicity," suggests that any mention or attention a person, product, or organization receives, even if it is negative or controversial, can ultimately have a positive impact on their image or success. While this idea has persisted in the realm of public relations and marketing for years, it is not without its controversies and complexities. In this article, we will explore the concept of whether any publicity is, indeed, good publicity, examining its origins, examples, and the nuances that define this complex relationship between controversy and public perception.

I. The Origins of the Phrase

The phrase "Any publicity is good publicity" is often attributed to Phineas T. Barnum, a 19th-century showman and businessman known for his sensational promotional tactics. Barnum's belief in the power of publicity led him to create elaborate hoaxes and engage in various forms of sensationalism to attract attention to his shows and museums. While Barnum may have coined the phrase, its underlying idea has been around for centuries, rooted in the belief that any form of exposure can have a positive impact.

II. The Controversial Nature of Controversy

Controversy, by its very nature, is polarizing. It can capture public attention and generate conversations, but it can also alienate and offend. This duality underscores the complexity of the relationship between controversy and public perception. While some individuals or entities may benefit from the attention generated by controversy, others may suffer reputational damage.

III. Examples of Controversy and Public Perception

a) Celebrity Scandals: Celebrities often find themselves at the center of controversy, whether due to personal behavior, public statements, or legal issues. Some celebrities have successfully leveraged controversy to boost their careers, while others have faced public backlash and professional consequences.

b) Political Controversies: Politicians frequently navigate controversies, and their handling of these situations can significantly impact public perception. Skilled politicians may use controversy to rally their base, while others may see their approval ratings plummet.

c) Corporate Controversies: Companies that find themselves embroiled in controversies, such as product recalls or ethical scandals, face a delicate balancing act. How they respond can determine whether the controversy ultimately harms or strengthens their brand.

d) Media and Entertainment: In the digital age, media outlets and content creators often rely on sensational headlines and controversial content to attract views and engagement. While this strategy may boost short-term metrics, it can also lead to reputational risks.

IV. The Role of Social Media

The rise of social media has amplified the impact of controversy. Platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram allow information to spread rapidly, making it challenging for individuals and organizations to control their narratives. Social media also provides a forum for public opinion to be expressed and shared, further shaping the perception of controversy.

V. The Fine Line Between Attention and Damage

One of the key challenges in assessing whether any publicity is good publicity lies in identifying the fine line between attention that boosts an individual or organization and attention that inflicts lasting damage. Factors such as the severity of the controversy, the response to it, and the values and beliefs of the target audience all play a role in determining the outcome.

VI. The Power of Redemption

For some, navigating controversy successfully can lead to redemption and a stronger public image. Individuals who take responsibility for their actions, make amends, and demonstrate personal growth may find that the public is willing to forgive and even support their comeback.

VII. Conclusion

The notion that any publicity is good publicity remains a contentious and debated concept. While there are instances where controversy has indeed led to positive outcomes, it is essential to recognize that not all forms of attention are created equal. The impact of controversy on public perception is highly context-dependent and contingent on numerous factors. As individuals, organizations, and public figures continue to grapple with the complexities of this relationship, the key lies in understanding when to court controversy and when to avoid it, always with a keen awareness of the potential consequences it may bring. Ultimately, the adage "Any publicity is good publicity" is a reminder that in the age of information and social media, managing one's image and reputation is both an art and a science.

Sundin now faced the challenge of selecting a new number that would not only represent his identity on the ice but also pay homage to his past.

V. The Tribute to Naslund and No. 19

In a heartfelt gesture, Mats Sundin decided to wear the number 19 jersey for the Vancouver Canucks, a number associated with another Canucks legend, Markus Naslund. By choosing number 19, Sundin was not only showing respect for Naslund but also acknowledging the significance of this iconic number in Vancouver hockey history.

VI. The Impact on Fans and Teammates

Sundin's decision to wear number 19 was met with appreciation and admiration from fans, teammates, and the hockey community. It signified his willingness to embrace a new chapter in his career while also recognizing the importance of team history and tradition.

VII. The Legacy of No. 19

During his brief stint with the Canucks, Sundin continued to be a force on the ice, contributing both as a scorer and a leader. While his time in Vancouver was relatively short, the legacy of number 19 lived on. It became a symbol of Mats Sundin's dedication to his craft, his respect for the game, and his ability to seamlessly integrate into a new team and city.

VIII. Conclusion

The story of Mats Sundin's jersey number selection is a poignant reminder of the profound significance that symbols and traditions hold in the world of sports. Sundin's decision to don the number 19 jersey for the Vancouver Canucks not only paid tribute to a fellow hockey great but also solidified his place in the hearts of fans in Vancouver and beyond. It showcased the power of sports to bring people together and the role that symbolism plays in connecting athletes, teams, and their supporters.
