How Things Went Wrong With Hobey

The news broke today that Matt Gilroy was not qualified with the rest of the Rangers Group II restricted free agents.

Given Gilroy had a two-year, $3.5 million contract and would have to had to been qualified at $2.3 million. Financially the numbers just don't work for a player who was a third pairing blueliner ... at best. The Rangers apparently offered him another deal at a lower number but Gilroy will test the waters on July 1st.

So what went wrong?

Gilroy raised the Rangers' expectations (and the final amount of his contract) with a Hobey Baker Award-winning senior year at Boston University. Looking back, the fact that he was joined on the BU blueline by five guys who were all drafted and have all gone pro since should have brought some doubt into the equasion. Opposing schools had to worry about NHL first round selection Kevin Shattenkirk, giving Gilroy more time and space.

Hobey then raised the fans's expectations with this and this. But that came during a time the team came out of the gate flying - the Rangers opened 2009-10 with a 8-3-1 run and everyone was focused on supposed phenom Michael Del Zotto.

Del Zotto was getting prime ice time, especially with the man advantage. Gilroy was left at the bottom of the depth chart, forced to skate with Wade Redden or Michal Rozsival - not a good position to be in. A guy who was supposed to be able to carry the puck and put up points was left cleaning up his partners' mistakes and dumping the disc off the glass. This last season was even worse as he was leapfrogged by Mike Sauer and Ryan McDonagh and his minutes per game dropped well below the 15 minute mark. Gilroy did step up his game late and played some solid, if unspectacular shifts in the playoffs but they were not enough to earn another big money deal.

This fall should see Tim Erixon, Tomas Kundratek, Pavel Valentenko, Jyri Niemi and even Mikhail Pashnin challenge for spots on Broadway. Seeing as Glen Sather is considering adding a veteran on July 1st as well, well, that doesn't leave any room for Hobey. Best wishes to the Bellmore boy.

The NYR Facts Of Life: #97 Matt Gilroy

For each player who suited up in a Blueshirt this season we will take the good, we will take the bad and take them both and see what we have. And this time around we start with the high numbers and work our way down so we begin with #97, Matt Gilroy.

#97's #s: 58 games, 3 goals, 8 assists, +5, 14 PIM (5 playoff games, one goal, -1, 2 PIM).

Take the good: Hobey stepped up his game in the playoffs and was pretty solid. Well, at least solid enough to keep veteran Steve Eminger in the press box. The Rangers scored just eight goals in the five games of the playoffs and he had one of them. Either Gilroy's confidence grew or he was just desperate to make an impression but he was more willing to jump into the attack later in the season. At the start he was more physical than he was in '09-10 but the offense was absent. His plus/minute went from even in that rookie season to a +5 this time around.

Take the bad: That was the only statistical category to improve. Gilroy had his points per game, hits per game, blocks per game, ice time per game and, hell, even the actual number of games decline. The ice time dropped by over two minutes as he was leapfrogged by a pair of rookies on the depth chart. His skill set seemed to lend well to the Tortorella offensive experiment but Gilroy didn't do enough up front that he was sent back to the blueline before the game was over.

Take them both and then we have: A guy turning 27 this summer who showed little ability to justify his $1.75 million two-year contract for either of the years. He was let off the hook for his struggles in the opening season because of the transition from college to pros but the sophomore slump did little to indicate that there is a future for him in the NHL, much less in New York.

The NYR Facts Of Life: #97 Matt Gilroy

For each player who suited up in a Blueshirt this season we will take the good, we will take the bad and take them both and see what we have. And what we have is come to the end as we reached #97, Matt Gilroy.

#97's #s: 69 games, 4 goals, 11 assists, even, 23 PIM.

Take the good: Gilroy started his Ranger career like gangbusters, what with that outstanding goal in preseason and fantastic first real NHL goal with Brian Leetch watching. He showed remarkable hands and a good view of the ice ... the moon was the limit for the Hobey Baker winner.

Take the bad: Well, Hobey came back to Earth quickly. He scored the last of his four goals on November 28th and went without a tally the rest of the way - a span of 43 (!) games. Torts sent him to Hartford for a spell, then brought him back, then made him sit and watch from the pressbox as Anders Eriksson took his sixth defenseman spot for the stretch run. At 25 years old you would think that Hobey would be in shape and have some consistency but he admitted that the transition straight from college was tough. And he paid for it by being forced to watch the final seven games of the season.

Take them both and then we have: Admitting you have a problem is the first step towards solving it so what we have is a work in progress. Over his 69 games Gilroy averaged better than a shot (82) and a blocked shot (77) a night so there is talent there, now he just has to find the drive to turn himself into a real NHL defenseman who can contribute night after night.

Long Arm Of The Law

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that defenseman Matt Gilroy has been assigned to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL). In addition, goaltender Matt Zaba has been recalled from Hartford, while goaltender Chad Johnson has been assigned to Hartford.
First off, the Chad Johnson move was just to get him some game action as Hank will start on Saturday. The Gilroy one, which everyone has been talking about, is more complicated. Here is a few thoughts:

*John Tortorella's idea of coaching is to blame everyone else for the team's ills. And the loss against the Blackhawks was clearly all because Gilroy was beat on the outside by Byfuglien. Not because Prospal turned into a deer in headlights when the puck was on his stick in front of the empty net or because Chris Drury couldn't contribute any kind of offense at all.

*The move isn't entirely unlike Mike Sauer getting blamed for Paul Mara's indiscretions last season that led to three goals against. Sauer was immediately sent back down and wasn't even given a shot in camp as everyone was wowed by MDZ and Hobey.

*Hobey is a rookie, and thus able to scolded and benched. Rozy and Redden can suck night after night but they are highly paid veterans, and thus exempt from any form of accountability.

*That which does not kill us makes us stronger. If Gilroy can survive in Hartford where he will be a prime target for opposing forecheckers then he will come back stronger than before.

*If he can score some goals, it will also boost his confidence and we may see more of those end to end rushes he has dazzled with this season. As the Rangers have collapsed deeper and deeper into their own zone, Hobey hasn't had any chances or the nerve to get to open ice.

*The Rangers salary cap situation sucks and every extra dollar will help when Sather goes out and blows draft picks or prospects for overpaid scoring that won't score once they get to Broadway.

Hobey is on a one-way contract, which means he will get paid his NHL salary even though he will be playing in the A. As he is 25 and has limited NHL experience, he won't have to go through waivers to come back. So relax, Hobey will be back, his wallet will just be a bit lighter after buying dinner for his new teammates. And look at it this way, he is the lucky one - the first rat off a sinking ship.

Nah, I'm not down on these guys at alllllllllll.
