The NYR Facts Of Life: #20 Vinny Prospal

For each player who suited up in a Blueshirt this season we will take the good, we will take the bad and take them both and see what we have. And this time around we started with the high numbers and are up to #20, Vaclav Prospal.

#20's #s: 29 games, 9 goals, 14 assists, +4, 8 PIM (5 playoff games, one goal, no assists, +1, no PIM).

Take the good: Prospal was the only player to maintain some chemistry with Marian Gaborik. He scored in his first game back from injury on February 3rd and then put up 13 of his points in an 11 game span a few weeks later. Had 58 hits in his 34 games, 14 of which came in the five playoff games. Ten of his 23 points came on the power play. Not a single player - not even any of the rookies - was as happy as he was when he scored.

Take the bad: Prospal is old, he has slowed and he missed more than half of the season thanks to his bad knee. He didn't get a single shot on goal in two playoff games, one being the double OT disaster - for someone in a top-six spot, seeing serious ice time and with a 14.8 shooting percentage, that is just ridiculous.

Take them both and then we have: There were stretches of last season where Prospal disappeared but he didn't play enough this time to run into the doldrums - unless you count the playoffs. As we saw at the fan forum, the players love him and respect him so having the old man around isn't a detriment. But he is just keeping Chris Kreider's spot warm until the kid grows a pair and jumps to the NHL.

True Blue Subscriber Night

The Rangers held a fan forum for season subscribers tonight inside the Manhattan Center. It was the same space that held last year's Lifer Forum and the team kept the same formula this time around. Parade the Rangers in, have the team banter with a moderator, then open the floor to questions from fans.

Ryan Callahan, Henrik Lundqvist and Brian Boyle were on the panel last year and were joined tonight by Vinny Prospal, Brandon Prust and Ryan McDonagh. Some randomness to come out of all of the talking:

*The biggest thing to come out from the players was Vinny Prospal's admission that all is not well with his rehab. Prospal said that he has been testing it and was skating "on one leg." The one thing pushing him is his promise to his son that he will play again but certainly he did not seem optimistic.

*Prospal is so tan from spending all summer playing tennis outdoors. Hank is tan because he spent the off time during the recent Florida trip out by the pool.

*Hank overdressed with a sharp, skin-tight suit while Prust underdressed and was given a bit of grief for it.

*The guys have good chemistry and there was a bit of fun banter to be had. McDonagh, however, did the smart rookie thing and kept his mouth shut. Kinda felt bad for him because he was barely acknowledged after his initial q&a with Al.

*McDonagh admitted that he is not a big television guy and he prefers to read while Cally admitted that he has a passion for reality TV - specifically Toddlers & Tiaras and Jersey Shore.

*As ridiculous as that was, Cally came across as the captain. I'm not sure how to phrase it any other way - he had a certainty to the way he was talking and the way he spoke to the other guys that just seemed to me to show leadership.

*Brian Boyle's nickname is Boiler. And the guys acknowledged that hockey nicknames are not particularly inventive nowadays.

*As I tweeted, many of the fan-asked questions were dumb beyond redemption; the players must have walked away thinking that we are all idiots. Many people actually didn't ask questions, choosing instead to rant or talk about themselves.

*One poor woman, who may have had some kind of mental disability, went on and on about gifts she sent to the guys. It was heart-felt but rambling and she was cat-called by another member of the audience.

*Hank said that he goes through 120 sticks a year, and that he may not throw his sticks into the crowd anymore during the three stars as it ignites fights in the crowd (and some brass said that he shouldn't). The fact that he had the three-game point streak was brought up and Hank said he called several friends to taunt them.

*Scott Lasky was the MC and he was horrid. The guy is corporate vanilla awfulness. He tried to claim an life-long fandom of the team, saying that he was a Ranger fan who used to get beat up during the years that the "boys on the bus of Bossy, Potvin Trottier" were going on. Sorry pal, the Boys on the Bus were the Oilers, not the Islanders.

*For as good as Al was, he didn't do his homework ahead of time and said that Prust was a Western Canada guy when, in fact, the Ranger hails from London, Ontario. Whoops.

*People asked if the team was going to play in the next Winter Classic and, of course, the guys didn't know but would like to. They also have no problem with starting next season overseas as Callahan said that the last time it was a good experience and it brought the boys together.

*And everyone hates Sidney Crosby.

All told it was a nice evening but, of course, you left wanting more. There were no autographs, no photos and only a lucky few received prizes. But, considering the large amount of diehard Ranger fans, those 1,000 or so in attendance were the lucky few to even get to go so we should be thankful.

Vinny's Back

@NYP_Brooksie: Prospal in for over 35 one yr deal with bonuses... // Prospal $1M base with another $1.1 or so in easily achievable bonuses
Well, Torts liked Vinny, Vinny liked New York so he comes back for another go-around. As I said in the Facts of Life, Vinny disappeared when the going got tough. He has his moments - slipping past D only to pop up for a goal down low - but his consistency needs to be better for a veteran presence around a younger Ranger team.

The NYR Facts Of Life: #20 Vinny Prospal

For each player who suited up in a Blueshirt this season we will take the good, we will take the bad then take them both and see what we have. It's time for the first man with a letter, alternate captain #20 Vaclav Vinny Prospal.

#20's #s: 75 games, 20 goals (6 ppg, 1 shg, 4 gwg), 38 assists, +8, 32 PIM.

Take the good: Prospal was the one player to show some chemistry with Marian Gaborik and anyone who could make the superstar comfortable is ok in our book. He started the season on fire with everyone ranting and raving what a brilliant addition he was to the team. That reputation carried through much of the season, even through a 14 game pre-Christmas goal drought. He got hot again going into the Olympic break with 11 points over nine games. And outside of the numbers, Prospal showed a passion and dedication for the team every time MSG decided to turn their cameras on him in postgame interviews.

Take the bad: Vinny wasn't able to shove anything up Tortorella's butt this season as he was one of the veterans who disappeared when the going got tough. In the team's six regulation losses and four OTLs after the break, Prospal managed just one goal and two assists. He didn't even manage a single shot in the final game against the Flyers. That photo above, I believe, came when he broke his 14 game, preChristmas scoring drought. For a first liner, 14 games is just too long to go cold.

Take them both and then we have: Someone who was quite good for the money he was being paid. Seeing as the Rangers only had to pay him $1.15 mil, that is a good deal for a first-liner to ride shotgun with Gaborik. But if the cost was higher, he would have been even more of a disappointment given his performance in crunch time. The decision to re-sign him this offseason will be a tough one to make.

So What Now?

If you haven't heard the news yet, Vinny Prospal will be out for around three weeks after undergoing surgery this morning. Apparently he suffered a lateral meniscus tear during the Islander game, which explains why he played so poorly. Even though he disappears for big stretches at a time, Prospal has been a big part of the Rangers this season and leaves a big void. So what can we do? This is how I see it:

*Option #1: Put Erik Christensen back into the lineup and juggle everyone else around. The Blueshirts dealt with Dubi being out, this really isn't much different. Christensen hasn't really gotten himself a chance to shine as of yet, so maybe this is the opportunity he needs. HOWEVER, January is a ridiculously busy month with 16 games so they might feel too desperate to give Crosby's former running partner a real chance - as they haven't to date.

*Option #2: Call up Corey Locke. Locke is the AHL's leading scorer with 41 points in 34 games with Hartford and has them above .500 at 16-13-5 despite poor goaltending. Valley has a 0.890 save percentage in seven games down there (he is 3-3-1 in case you were curious) and Matt Zaba has been even worse. Locke is undersized but a great puck mover and may just click with a sniper like Gabby. HOWEVER, if the Rangers call up Locke, I believe they risk losing him through waivers on the way back down, which is almost a certainty for any other team that wants to win this season's Calder Cup.

*Option #3: Trade for someone. Sather loves dealing with Phoenix, Robert Lang has 20 points in 39 games and makes just a million bucks so he would be a great fit. HOWEVER, you can be sure Maloney will ask for a high draft pick and a prospect in return - he's no dummy, especially with Sather on the ropes. Plus Phoenix is doing quite well right now despite their ownership so maybe not. Maybe an underachiever like Edmonton's Patrick O'Sullivan would be someone Sather would look at but the 24 year old is just 24 and makes more money so the cost would be high. Is he worth Bobby Sanguinetti and a pick?

*Option #4: Somehow make some cap space and swing a waiver deal with Washington for Michael Nylander. Nylander has 14 points (13 assists) in 11 games with Grand Rapids and knows New York. The Caps would love nothing better than to get rid of him and his salary. HOWEVER, even at half price, the slow 37 year old would have a $1.5 million cap hit for the rest of this season and a $2.4 million hit for next year (thanks CapGeek!).

*Option #5: Go completely off the map, make some massive trade for another half-dead, bloated loser who will hang around the Rangers neck like the albatrosses of Redden, Rozsival and Drury. HOWEVER, what kind of sane general manager would do that?

Personally, I believe that the team will go with the first option for a little while before panicking and making a move of any kind - let's face it, there are other problems that have to be dealt with as well (Kotalik, you SUCK! Three million dollars a year for three years of what? YOUUUUU SUUUUUCK!!!). But, seeing as this is Glen Sather we are talking about, I would lean towards the final option and just be pleasantly surprised if he doesn't drop the ball ...

Tough Talk From Torts

John Tortorella spoke to Jeff Z. Klein over at the Times today and had this to say about the signing of Vinny Prospal:
“Vinny and I had a long conversation prior to our even talking about this … I know, I’ve coached him for so many years — my question was, Does he want to play? Is life too good? Because he’s made a lot of money. He’s been successful. He’s a good person. But I just wanted to make sure that he wanted to play. He’s ticked off. He was bought out. He has something to prove here. I think it’s a good situation on a one-year deal, and show us maybe for when another contract comes around. Some other people in the organization need to understand that too.”

Putting The Band Back Together

First John Tortorella brings in his assistant coach from Tampa and now he gets one of the horses from the Lightning stable - Vinny Prospal. As Larry Brooks mentioned yesterday, the Rangers officially added Prospal to the roster.

As I said last month, I think Vinny will look great across from Marian Gaborik. As Brooksie said, Vinny provides insurance if Dubi falters as first line center. Now, I don't think that Dubi will but I do believe in insurance. And it helps balance the roster a bit more:

Prospal-Dubinsky-Gaborik
Higgins-Drury-Kotalik
Avery-Anisimov-Callahan
Criminal-Not Going To Play Much-Who Cares?

Outside of the human refuse that they will use for the fourth line that won't see much ice time (Brash, Voros, Boyle, Arnason, Lisin), I have to admit that those lines look pretty damn good to me. Granted, there is only one legitimate first line/scorer/star in the bunch but hockey is a team game and those lines look like they could have some chemistry. You know, chemistry? It's not something we have seen much of in the last 15 seasons, outside of the post-lockout year with the Czechs (and Nylander), amazingly the very same season we got screwed by the Olympics too.

Now we can hope that this group becomes fast friends and finds that chemistry because if they don't, then they may just unite against a common foe - John Tortorella. And when Torts becomes the common enemy, he risks losing the team (see: Tampa).

One things is for sure, this team will score some goals and be interesting to watch. And that's all we can ask for, right?

Should We Bring In The Bolt?

The news just came out today that Tampa Bay is going to buy out the remainder of Vinny Prospal's contract (h/t Puck Daddy).

The first thing I thought was that Prospal would look great across from Gabby. Once Zherdev gets kicked to the curb Friday, why not replace him with an experienced, capable winger who frankly has had a measure of success at MSG in the past?

I would love to dream more but I am at work. What do you guys think?
