Toys For Tots

As you can see, Adam Graves will of course be there along with some alumni and current Rangers. Those are said to be Ryan Callahan, Michael Del Zotto, Christopher Higgins, Michal Roszival, Dan Girardi and Matt Gilroy but you never know. If it is like past years, two or three will be signing autos at a time. Meanwhile, Gravey shmoozes, poses for photos, signs autos ... everything that he always does, everything that makes him the amazing human being we revere him for being. And there will likely be the usual family fun - face painting and stuff. After taking that in, you can skate on the outdoor rink in Bryant Park - bring your own skates and a lock (for a locker) because renting both is costly but the ice time is free.

I've gone in the past - you guys know I'm big on good causes - and will likely stop by early on before making my way to Newark to root on the Canucks against the Devils. Mmmmmaaaaarrrrtttttyyyy. Mmmmmaaaaarrrrtttttyyyy. Mmmmmaaaaarrrrtttttyyyy.

An Open Letter To Those At Camp 2009-10

Hello, and welcome to the New York Rangers,

There are some things you need to know before you get the 2009-2010 NHL season started as a member of the Broadway Blueshirts. I will attempt to lay them out for you to make your transition to New York easier. If you keep these in mind, your stay will be an enjoyable and, hopefully, productive one. Best of luck.

1- First and foremost, being a Ranger requires respect. Respect for your teammates. Respect for the jersey. Respect for the fans. Respect the Rangers. Everything else on this list falls under this dictum. Respect. It sounds simple, but it's not. It's a complete way of being that will require hard work but the payoff is virtually limitless.

2 - Always, ALWAYS have your teammate's back. There is nothing worse than seeing a player get hit in a vulnerable position without retribution. That especially goes for your goaltender.

3 - I mentioned hard work. That is what is expected of you. Anything less - let up for just one moment of one shift - and the results would be disastrous. During that lapse a goal may be scored against the Rangers, or it may not. Either way, someone will notice. The Rangers are the most scrutinized NHL team not in Canada, both by the media and by the fans. You do not want to let up in this town. At the same time, even if things aren't going your way - go without scoring for games at a time, whatever - if you are visibly working hard you will given a pass. You may look around at the fans by the ice and see the nice clothes, the Blackberries and the models, but don't be fooled: this is a blue collar fanbase that expects and appreciates hard work.

4 - Meet the fans, greet the fans. They are your best asset on the ice, better than any newfangled composite stick or heated skateblade. You may have played in the Garden in the past, you may have not. But you have never felt anything like it when you have 18,200 people getting your back, helping you up, pushing you forward. At the same time, that 18,200 can be merciless. This goes back to No. 2, if you don't show maximum effort, you will face the ire of the fans and trust me, you won't enjoy it.

5 - Do anything but sit back and watch when the Islanders, Devils or Flyers are in town. Those are the times to be proactive. Very proactive. There is no faster way to the hearts of the fans than through the franchise's biggest rivals. In this day and age of free agency (which may have brought you here), rivalries are harder to cling to for players - you may have friends on the other team - but they are grossly important to the fans. Go out to dinner with them, go on vacation with them, whatever - from the second that puck drops, you had better be out for blood. Players come and go but that jersey that you pull on has been around for a long time and that means something. That Blueshirt comes with the baggage of hatred for wrongs past. It may sound petty, but it is a part of life. And, if you use it right - through the aforementioned hard work - then it is a very, very good thing.

6 - You know that quiet guy who is hanging around practice? The mild-mannered fellow with his name and number nine in the rafters. Listen to him. If he says something, it's for a reason. If he acts a certain way, it's for a reason. And that reason is always the betterment of the franchise and, honestly, the betterment of yourself. Pay attention to Adam Graves. You will not find a better role model in your search for what it means to be a Ranger. There is a reason why he is beloved in this city, and what he did on the ice is only part of the explanation. And that new guy in the office? Messier? Yeah, him too.

7 - Give not to temptation. New York never closes and there is fun to be had no matter what your vice may be. But if you give in to it, then you are breaking No. 1 on this list. There is a time and place for everything, and while you wear that jersey the time is not right for nefarious activities.

8 - Spend some time reading up on the past. The more you read about the 83 year history of the franchise, the more you will understand just how important No. 1 on this list is. A lot of people have put their blood, sweat and tears into building the Rangers and the least you can do is know who they were.

9 - Don't be afraid to speak your mind because honesty is indeed the best policy. Silly, right? Not at all. When speaking to the media or to the press, one of the worse things you can do is speak in benign cliches. There is no such thing as 110%. You can only take things one game, or one day, at a time. And you don't always get the bounces. We know that; tell us how, tell us why. You can't be afraid to show your personality, because that is who you are and we want to know you. We want to root for you. We want to see you succeed.

10 - Don't believe the hype. There are a lot of people playing pundit, a lot of people shooting their (our) mouths off. Expectations aren't as high as they have been in the past due to the roster shake up but this is still New York and success is always demanded. But that will come if you work hard, listen to the coaches and play your game to the best of your ability.

This list may seem daunting, but you will be pulling on a Blueshirt and these are the things that come with the jersey.

Let's Go Rangers.

Question of the Day

For all of the joy and wonder that was last night's ceremony, I have to admit some disappointment.

How is it that the current players didn't give a gift? The (so-called) captains skated the No. 9 banner over and hooked it up so it could head to the rafters, but that was the only contribution that the current team made. That's it.

Are they so concerned with the current recession (of which they have virtually no chance of being laid off from, even though several deserve to be)? At the very, very least, how could they not pass a hat around and make a contribution to the Garden of Dreams in Adam's name? Is it because every couple of weeks one or two of them are called upon by the team's PR firm to take part in a coat drive or visit a hospital or something so they feel that that is enough of a contribution?

Adam Graves has class, it's time the current players show some.

29-18-5: Special Night Ruined By Hockey Game

It looked like there were a thousand or so people who filed out of the Garden after the Adam Graves number retirement. They left the building on a high note having witnessed a heartwarming dedication to one of the best human beings to pull on a hockey jersey.

I was not one of those people.

I wish I was.

The Rangers put together a pathetic effort against the second worse team in the NHL and, if not for Ilya Kovalchuk's idiocy, they would have lost. As my friend Pat mentioned again and again, 'hey, at least we got a point.' Getting a point helps the team tread water before Philly catches up in games played and passes the Blueshirts in the standings. Getting a point will not bring forth change. Getting a point will not make a statement - hey, this team is deeply flawed, DO SOMETHING. But it is all too likely that nothing will be done and we will be forced to sit back and watch a team that spends millions upon millions of dollars and can't score a goal against the squad that has allowed the second-most in the NHL. Terrific. Before I break down in tears, some observations on the evening:

*Adam Graves finally breaking down as his banner went up was the most moving moment of all of the '94 Ranger number retirements. I've been lucky to go to all four and it was by far the best moment of all of them. The toughest Ranger, the guy who put himself through hell to score most of his 367 NHL goals, couldn't bare to watch as the building roared around him and his name and number rose into immortality. Incredible.

*On the other hand, what the hell was that garbage with the cast of the Sopranos? A bunch of loser actors on a show that is already off the air got to march across the ice like they were anyone of importance? The flow of the ceremony came to a screeching halt as those clowns walked out to awkwardly give Graves some gifts. And if that Van Zant guy could make it up from the Super Bowl in Tampa to take part in this, why couldn't Bruce Springsteen show up to hand Graves his guitar personally??

*How sad is it that, in all likelihood, there isn't a single Ranger on the current roster who will get their number retired?

*Steven McDonald showed up to honour Graves and got his usual warm reception from the Garden crowd. But the best part, to me, was after the game started. During a break, they showed McDonald iceside and not only did the fans cheer again, but Kari Lehtonen also banged his stick on the ice and waved. That is class.

*Lehtonen had a pretty good game but he had it pretty easy. On a night where the focus was on a player who battled for every inch of ice and crashed the crease, the Rangers allowed the awful Atlanta defense to keep them out of good scoring areas and away from rebounds. Most of the best Ranger shots just missed the far post wide and ended up out of the zone.

*Nik Zherdev actually skated hard but it came to no avail. He seems to have completely lost his scoring touch. Aside from his multitude of aborted rushes and off-the-mark passes, it was astonishing how a player with his arsenal of moves could just say screw it and crank a 60 mile an hour shot right at the goaltender during the shootout. What a cop out.

*The "size" reasoning that Tom Renney uses to justify putting Aaron Voros in the lineup is not just wearing thin, it has worn out and the roadburn is killing us. How a team that can't score is keeping a scorer like Petr Prucha on the shelf for this oversized idiot is inexcusable. Voros did nothing all night outside of taking a bad penalty. For all of his size, he gets pushed around and gets knocked out of scoring positions. Not like he could score once in them, what with those cement hands.

*They say that Artem Anisimov has good hands, but we sure as hell didn't see them. My buddy the Sarge pointed it out early that Anisimov was a stiff and I would have to agree. Perhaps it was nerves but the kid never seemed comfortable and the only noticeable thing he did was get crushed on the boards.

*As for the other addition to the Ranger roster, Erik Reitz, I guess he had a decent debut. He didn't play terribly and was not noticed for most of the night (a good thing for a defenseman). The one time he did get attention, Reitz had put himself out of position to lay down a big hit and got into a losing fight against Nathan Oystrick. There is room for improvement.

*Rozy ... seriously, WTF? Even Wade Redden made some nice defensive plays. What the hell happened to the Czech? Did his game go to Siberia with Jagr?

*Plenty of people complained when the fourth line was out on the ice but, as always, I have to defend them. Blair Betts and Freddie Sjostrom consistently used their speed to put the Thrashers on their heels and Colton Orr was the only Ranger forward to use his body. Granted, the likelihood of them scoring is slim, but at this point you can say the same thing for the money pits that are Chris Drury and Mexican't Scott Gomez.

*I would have included Markus Naslund in there but he did score the equalizer. Of course, the Atlanta defense just decided to step aside and watch the last play of regulation but a goal is a goal.

*I seem to have used "but" a lot in this and I think it is because for every good thing with this team, there is something equally bad or worse that goes with it. There are few things that stand alone in the black.

*One of them is the bottom line for the Rangers. They had to make a ton of money as the merchandise flew off the shelves. When I finally went to try to get a program, shirt and hat during the second intermission, all three were sold out. Another late shopper phrased it best - "Recession? What recession?"

*As Graves mentioned, John Davidson was in the building. I saw him downstairs after the game and he was graciously posing for pictures with Ranger fans. He laughed as someone begged him to trade us Barret Jackman, and he gave me a 'oooo' look and a smile when I sarcastically said thanks for trading us Christian Backman.

*Now have to admit that it was fantastic for the fans to do a "Potvin Sucks" chant during the ceremony - it was perfect timing and even Gravey had to laugh. But to do it 10 more times during the game against Atlanta was just idiotic.

*PHW Three Stars
3-Henrik Lundqvist - 21 saves.
2-Slava Kozlov - shootout goal.
1-Kari Lehtonen - 39 saves.

Scotty Hockey Three Stars
3-Matt Schneider - Probably the best of the blueliners from Blueland.
2-Lehtonen - Solid effort and a showing of class. Nice work.
1-Adam Graves - No explanation needed.

29-18-5: Special Night Ruined By Hockey Game
Sports have a unique way of intertwining with our lives, often becoming an integral part of our most special moments. Whether it's gathering with friends to watch a game or attending a live event, sports have a knack for adding an extra layer of excitement and camaraderie to any occasion. But what happens when the very thing that's meant to enhance a special night ends up taking an unexpected turn and leaves us feeling disappointed? This article explores the experience of a special night marred by a hockey game and the emotional rollercoaster that ensues.

The Anticipation of a Special Night
Imagine this scenario: you've been looking forward to a special night for weeks, maybe even months. It's a celebration of an important milestone, a birthday, an anniversary, or another significant event in your life. The anticipation has been building, and you've meticulously planned every detail to ensure it's a memorable occasion. The atmosphere is charged with excitement, and you can't wait to share this moment with loved ones.

The Role of Sports in Special Occasions
Sports have an incredible ability to amplify the joy and excitement of special occasions. A live sporting event, in particular, can be the centerpiece of a memorable night. The roar of the crowd, the spectacle of the game, and the shared experience with fellow fans all contribute to creating lasting memories. Attending a game on such a night can feel like the perfect way to celebrate.

The Unexpected Twist: A Hockey Game
Now, picture this: your special night falls on the same evening as a crucial hockey game, one that holds significant importance for your favorite team. You find yourself facing a dilemma – do you stick to your original plans and cherish the special night you've been looking forward to, or do you succumb to the allure of the game and risk compromising the occasion?

For many passionate sports fans, this is a tough decision. The emotional connection to a team or sport can run deep, and the fear of missing out on a historic game can be overwhelming. The battle between your loyalty to the event and your loyalty to the team can be emotionally charged.

The Emotional Rollercoaster
The experience of having a special night marred by a hockey game can be an emotional rollercoaster. Here's how it unfolds:

1. The Initial Conflict
You're torn between your commitment to the special night and your desire to watch the game. You weigh the pros and cons, consider your priorities, and assess the impact of your decision on your loved ones and the event itself. The conflict begins.

2. The Compromise
In some cases, you may attempt to strike a compromise. Perhaps you'll find a sports bar near the venue or attempt to discreetly stream the game on your phone. This compromise often results in divided attention, as you're mentally and emotionally pulled in two directions.

3. The Decision
Ultimately, a decision has to be made. Do you prioritize the special night and immerse yourself in the celebration, or do you prioritize the game and risk missing out on the unique atmosphere and experiences the event has to offer?

4. The Emotional Aftermath
Regardless of your choice, there's often an emotional aftermath. If you choose the game, you might feel a pang of regret for missing out on a special night. If you choose the special night, you may experience anxiety or frustration from not being able to watch the game live.

Coping Strategies
Handling this conflict requires a delicate balance of priorities and emotions. Here are some coping strategies to navigate the situation:

1. Plan Ahead
If you know your special night coincides with an important game, plan ahead. Communicate your desires and concerns with your loved ones. They may be understanding and willing to accommodate your passion for sports.

2. Embrace Moderation
Consider embracing moderation. Watch parts of the game or check updates during breaks in the special night's activities. This way, you can enjoy both without feeling too divided.

3. Record the Game
If it's possible, record the game to watch later. This allows you to fully immerse yourself in the special night while still catching up on the game afterward.

4. Prioritize Special Moments
Remember that special occasions are about creating memories with loved ones. Prioritize the moments that matter most during the event, and you may find that the game becomes a secondary concern.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. How do I balance my love for sports with important life events?

While the love for sports is undeniable, the significance of life's milestones and celebrations should not be underestimated. Ultimately, it's the memories we create with loved ones during special occasions that leave a lasting impact, and sometimes, those memories are more valuable than any game.

Adam Graves Night / Peepin' Foes: Atlanta Thrashers

Adam Graves will never make the Hockey Hall of Fame.

His 681 points in 1,277 NHL games (playoffs included) with one Stanley Cup doesn't even come close to the criteria for entry. Unlike in junior, Graves never had a 100 point season but he did have six 100+ penalty minute campaigns. The 1994-95 work stoppage-shortened season pretty much stopped his rise to stardom. He had increased his point totals every year leading up to that and then his production fell off as the wheels fell off of the Rangers. It would be a terrible shame if it had curtailed his career and left him among the list of anonymous NHL alumni.

It did not.

Graves stayed in the league another eight years and continued to do his best work - charity and service to the community. The New York Rangers made their best personnel move in over a decade by bringing Graves in after he called it a career. And, by doing so, Graves has become the face of the franchise. The team has a low key coach, low key players, a reclusive general manager and a much-loathed owner and yet the Rangers are just as beloved in the city as always (bandwagon '94 not included). Sick kids, sad kids, kids down on their luck, abused women, even homeless folks ... Graves continues to work to bring some brightness into their lives and show them that there is a good life to be lived and that dreams can come true.

Sure his work doesn't get the column inches in the papers, but in this case that isn't a bad thing. An aphorism in journalism is bad news sells. The only time that I can remember that there was anything negative having to do with Adam Graves in New York was the news that he was dealt to San Jose. His tireless work around the city was rarely reported but that never meant anything to Graves - he did it because it was right.

And no matter his numbers, it is right that the Rangers retire his number Tuesday night.

Ceremony info: First off the schedule:
5:30pm Doors Open
6:30pm Graves Night Ceremony Begins
7:30pm Rangers-Thrashers Warm-ups
8:08pm Rangers vs. Atlanta Thrashers

Merch will be overpriced but not as bad as Messier Night - shirt $28, hat $24, book $20, puck $8, replica banner $40. Everyone in attendance will get minibanners, which will have American Express on the bottom (like the Leetch ones did). Bring tissues because I'm sure this ceremony will be touching, even for tough hockey fans. Expect a few thousand to clear out after the ceremony and the place to be a ghost town by the final whistle - it is a school night and the Rangers are playing the Thrashers of all teams. What a clear, saddening money grab by the Garden for scheduling it this way. This number should have went up against the Oilers back in November.

Where We Are: It is hard to say as Zipay is reporting a number of changes that includes the debut of Reitz and Anisimov. This tinkering to a team that just played one of their best games of the season is dangerous so this should be interesting ... And remember, the Rangers often suck when their routines are messed with and a major ceremony and a start time an hour late will certainly change things up.

Where They Are: Atlanta sucks. They are just four points clear of the worse team in the NHL (haha Islanders) and have lost four straight games ... including one to the Isles (hahahaha). Their goaltending is woeful; the formerly reliable Moose Hedberg has a 3.62 gaa and a .885 save percentage. Their top defensemen, Matt Schneider and Ron Hainsey, are a combined -30.

Who To Watch For: Kovy is still a hockey god, even if he is surrounded by a poor team. His contract is due up at the end of the season so if we can buy out Wade Redden ... no, we're not that lucky. He is playing with the solid young former Predator Rich Peverley who is doing quite well since his move since Nashville. The Little White Russian line of Brian Little, Todd White and Slava Kozlov have played well enough to get the best line nickname since the Legion of Doom (boo). That idiot goon XLB was just activated from IR but hopefully will still be out instead of back on the ice trying to hurt people. Zach Bogosian is putting together a solid little rookie season - he is no Luke Schenn, but he has skills and grit and has a good future ahead of him.

What To Watch For: Joey Crabb scored a shortie against the Blueshirts last time and the Rangers power play hasn't gotten much better. See if Nik Zherdev steps up his game against Kovy the way he did against Malkin last time the two faced off. See which Henrik Lundqvist shows up - the stellar one who gave up just one goal against the B's or the one who got curbstomped by the Penguins.

What We'll (Hopefully) See: The Rangers play like the man they are honouring pregame - a hard-nosed, never-say-die style where they pay the price to get to the goals.

Also Check Out: The team's own blog Blueland is on hiatus but the requisite MSM blog is up to date and the in-depth, well thought out Do The Thrashers Have Large Talons? has moved to SBN and took a new lame name.

Adam Graves Night: A Celebration of a Rangers Legend
Adam Graves, a name synonymous with the New York Rangers, is a beloved figure in the world of hockey. His dedication to the game, his community, and his teammates has left an indelible mark on the sport. On the night of his celebration, "Adam Graves Night," the Rangers and their fans come together to honor this legendary player and reflect on his exceptional career. In this article, we'll delve into the significance of Adam Graves Night and also take a peek at the Rangers' opponents for the evening, the Atlanta Thrashers.

Adam Graves: A Rangers Icon
Adam Graves began his NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings, but it was with the New York Rangers that he achieved true hockey stardom. Acquired by the Rangers in 1991, Graves quickly became a fan favorite. His work ethic, tenacity, and unwavering commitment to his teammates and the community set him apart.

Graves's most memorable moments with the Rangers include:

1994 Stanley Cup Victory: Graves was an integral part of the Rangers' championship team in 1994. His stellar play and leadership on and off the ice were instrumental in ending the Rangers' 54-year Stanley Cup drought.

Rangers' All-Time Leading Goal Scorer: Graves is the Rangers' all-time leader in goals scored, with 52 goals during the 1993-94 season. This record still stands today.

Community Involvement: Graves's impact extended beyond the rink. He was known for his charitable work, particularly with children's hospitals, and was awarded the King Clancy Memorial Trophy for his leadership and humanitarian contributions.

Adam Graves Night: A Tribute to Greatness
Adam Graves Night is not just about celebrating a player's accomplishments; it's about honoring a man who embodied the spirit of the Rangers and their commitment to winning and community service. On this special night, the Rangers organization and fans come together to pay tribute to Graves's contributions to the team and the city of New York.

Activities that typically take place on Adam Graves Night include:

Jersey Retirement: The Rangers often retire a player's jersey on this night, and in Graves's case, it's a no-brainer. His No. 9 jersey is raised to the rafters of Madison Square Garden, joining the elite company of Rangers legends.

Video Montages: The night usually features video montages highlighting Graves's career highlights, including key goals, memorable plays, and community service.

Guest Appearances: Teammates, coaches, and friends from Graves's career often attend the celebration to share anecdotes and express their admiration for the man of the hour.

Charitable Initiatives: In the spirit of Adam Graves's philanthropic efforts, charity auctions, fundraisers, and partnerships with local organizations are common during these events.

Fan Giveaways: Fans in attendance may receive special commemorative items or collectibles to mark the occasion.

Peepin' Foes: Atlanta Thrashers
While the primary focus of Adam Graves Night is, understandably, the celebration of Graves's contributions to the Rangers, there's also a hockey game to be played. On this night, the Rangers' opponents are the Atlanta Thrashers, providing an intriguing backdrop for the evening.

The Atlanta Thrashers, a franchise that has since relocated and become the Winnipeg Jets, had a relatively brief existence in the NHL. During their time in Atlanta, the Thrashers had their moments but struggled to establish a consistent winning tradition.

Some key points about the Atlanta Thrashers:

Franchise Relocation: In 2011, the franchise was sold and relocated to Winnipeg, where it became the Winnipeg Jets, reviving the Jets' name from a previous NHL team.

Limited Playoff Success: The Thrashers made the playoffs only once in their history, in the 2006-2007 season. They were swept in the first round by the New York Rangers.

Notable Players: Despite their limited success, the Thrashers featured some talented players, including Ilya Kovalchuk, Dany Heatley, and Marian Hossa.

Legacy: While the Thrashers are no longer part of the NHL landscape, their history and brief tenure in Atlanta remain a part of the league's history.

How To Get Blood From A Rock

How to Get Blood from a Stone: The Art of Achieving the Impossible

The age-old saying, "You can't get blood from a stone," implies that some tasks are so challenging or seemingly impossible that they're akin to trying to extract blood from an inanimate object. While it's true that certain endeavors may appear insurmountable, there are ways to tackle even the most daunting challenges. In this article, we will explore strategies and approaches for achieving what seems impossible and discuss the mindset required to turn such tasks into successful outcomes.

I. Understanding the Challenge

The first step in any endeavor is to thoroughly understand the challenge at hand. What makes the task seem impossible? What are the barriers, limitations, or constraints? By gaining a clear understanding of the challenge, you can begin to identify potential solutions.

II. The Power of Innovation

Innovation is often the key to overcoming seemingly impossible tasks. It involves thinking outside the box, questioning conventional wisdom, and exploring new approaches. Innovators have transformed industries and achieved feats that were once thought to be unattainable.

III. Persistence and Perseverance

Many great achievements were the result of relentless persistence. History is filled with stories of individuals who faced countless failures and setbacks before finally succeeding. The willingness to persevere in the face of adversity is a hallmark of those who achieve the impossible.

IV. Breaking Down the Challenge

Breaking down a seemingly impossible task into smaller, more manageable components can make it less daunting. Each component can then be addressed individually, making the overall goal more achievable.

V. Seeking Expertise and Guidance

It's essential to recognize when you need help or expertise beyond your own. Consulting with experts, mentors, or advisors who have experience in the area you're tackling can provide valuable insights and guidance.

VI. Learning from Failure

Failure is an integral part of any journey to achieve the impossible. Instead of viewing failure as a setback, consider it a learning opportunity. Each failure brings you one step closer to success, as you gain valuable insights and refine your approach.

VII. Embracing Creativity

Creativity knows no bounds, and it can lead to innovative solutions that defy conventional thinking. Encourage creative thinking among your team or collaborators to discover unique ways to address the challenge.

VIII. Staying Open-Minded

Being open-minded means being receptive to new ideas, feedback, and alternative viewpoints. A closed mind can limit your ability to find solutions to seemingly impossible tasks.

IX. Fostering Determination

Determination is the unwavering commitment to achieving a goal. It's the driving force behind turning the impossible into the possible. Cultivate determination within yourself and your team to stay focused on the task at hand.

X. Leveraging Technology and Resources

In today's digital age, technology and resources are more accessible than ever. Harness the power of technology, data, and available resources to gain a competitive edge in tackling challenging tasks.

XI. Cultivating a Growth Mindset

A growth mindset is the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work. Embracing this mindset can empower you to take on difficult challenges with the belief that you can learn and grow along the way.

XII. Celebrating Small Wins

Celebrate the small victories along the way. Recognizing progress, no matter how incremental, can boost morale and motivation, keeping you and your team inspired to continue pursuing the seemingly impossible.

XIII. The Triumph of Human Spirit

Throughout history, the human spirit has triumphed over countless challenges. It's the belief that we can achieve the impossible that has led to groundbreaking discoveries, extraordinary feats, and societal advancements.

While the saying, "You can't get blood from a stone," suggests the impossibility of certain tasks, it's essential to remember that with the right mindset, innovation, and determination, we can overcome even the most challenging obstacles. The art of achieving the impossible lies in our ability to break down barriers, persist in the face of adversity, and embrace creativity and innovation. By applying these strategies and approaches, we can turn the seemingly unattainable into reality and accomplish feats that leave a lasting legacy.

An Open Letter To Those Players At Camp

Hello, and welcome to the New York Rangers,

There are some things you need to know before you get the 2008-2009 NHL season started as a member of the Broadway Blueshirts.

2 - I mentioned hard work. You may look around at the fans by the ice and see the nice clothes, the Blackberries and the models, but this is a blue collar fanbase that expects and appreciates hard work.

3 - Meet the fans, greet the fans. 2, if you don't show maximum effort, you will face the ire of the fans and trust me, you won't like it.

4 - Do anything but sit back and watch when the Islanders, Devils or Flyers are in town. Pulling on that jersey comes with the baggage of hatred for wrongs past. It may sound petty, but it is a part of life. And, if you use it right - through the aforementioned hard work - then it is a very, very good thing.

5 - On February 3rd Adam Graves' No. 9 will be raised to the rafters. Pay attention. Pay attention not just to the testimonials and not just to the sheer adoration that will thunder through the Garden. Pay attention to Adam Graves. You will not find a better role model in your search for what it means to be a Ranger. Words cannot do him justice, just watch and listen.

6 - Always, ALWAYS have your teammate's back. There is nothing worse than seeing a player get hit in a vulnerable position without retribution. That especially goes for your goaltender.

The more you read about the 82 year history of the franchise, the more you will understand just how important No. 1 on this list is. A lot of people have put their blood, sweat and tears into building the Rangers and the least you can do is know who they were.

9 - Don't be afraid to speak your mind. Honesty is the best policy. Silly, right? Not at all. When speaking to the media or to the press, one of the worse things you can do is speak in benign cliches. There is no such thing as 110%. You can only take things one game, or one day, at a time. And you don't always get the bounces. We know that; tell us how, tell us why. You can't be afraid to show your personality, because that is who you are.

10 - Don't believe the hype. Because of the payroll, because of the market and because of the ever-positive preseason expectations, there is going to be people saying that you will win the Cup. Don't let it get to your head. Things can go south, and quickly with the tough teams on the schedule throughout the first month of the season. Work hard, listen to the coaches and play your game to the best of your ability.

This list may seem daunting, but you will be pulling on a Blueshirt and these are the things that come with the jersey.

Let's Go Rangers.

Title: "An Open Letter to Those Players at Camp: Embrace the Journey"

Dear Players at Camp,

As the new season approaches, you find yourselves at a pivotal moment in your hockey journey. Whether you're attending an NHL training camp, an AHL affiliate, or an amateur tryout, this is a time of immense opportunity and challenge. In this open letter, we want to offer you some insights, encouragement, and advice as you embark on this exciting phase of your hockey career.

Embrace the Unknown
Hockey, like life, is filled with uncertainties. Camps bring a mix of excitement and nervousness as you step into an environment where every shift, every practice, and every decision can influence your future. Embrace the unknown, and remember that it's okay to be nervous. Those nerves mean you care deeply about what you're doing.

Work Harder Than Ever
Success in hockey often comes down to one simple principle: hard work. Every stride, every shot, every defensive play—these moments are the result of countless hours of sweat, dedication, and sacrifice. The competition at camp will be fierce, and the margins between making the cut or not can be razor-thin. So, work harder than ever before, and give your absolute best.

Learn and Adapt
Hockey is a dynamic game, and the best players are those who continually learn and adapt. Pay attention to the coaches, soak up their wisdom, and be open to feedback. Whether it's adjusting your positioning, refining your shot, or enhancing your defensive skills, growth is a constant process. Adaptability can set you apart.

Support Your Teammates
In the world of hockey, you're part of something bigger than yourself—a team. Your teammates are your brothers on the ice, and their success is your success. Lift each other up, support one another through the ups and downs, and celebrate each other's achievements. The bonds you forge in the locker room can be some of the strongest you'll ever experience.

Stay Resilient
Hockey, like life, is full of setbacks. You might face injuries, slumps, or moments of self-doubt. Stay resilient. Remember that every great player has encountered adversity and emerged stronger. Your ability to bounce back from challenges will define your character and shape your career.

The Power of Patience
Patience is a virtue in hockey. Some players make an immediate impact, while others take time to develop. Trust the process, and don't be discouraged if success doesn't come overnight. Your journey is unique, and every step, no matter how small, brings you closer to your goals.

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
1. What should I do if I don't make the team?
Not making the team is a tough pill to swallow, but it's not the end of your hockey journey. Use the experience as motivation to improve and work even harder. Seek opportunities in lower leagues or consider other paths in the hockey world, such as coaching or scouting.

2. How can I deal with performance anxiety?
Performance anxiety is normal, even for seasoned pros. Focus on your preparation, stay in the moment, and use relaxation techniques like deep breathing to manage nerves. Remember that even the greatest athletes feel pressure, but they learn to thrive in it.

3. How can I balance hockey with other aspects of my life?
Balancing hockey with other commitments, such as work or school, can be challenging. Time management and prioritization are key. Communicate with your coaches and teammates about your schedule, and make sure to allocate time for rest and recovery.

4. What's the best way to approach training and conditioning?
A well-rounded training regimen includes strength and conditioning, skill development, and mental preparation. Work with experts in each area to create a tailored plan. Nutrition, hydration, and sleep are equally important for peak performance.

5. How do I maintain a positive mindset in the face of setbacks?
A positive mindset is crucial in hockey. Surround yourself with a support system of friends, family, and mentors who believe in you. Focus on your long-term goals and the progress you've made. Every setback is an opportunity to learn and grow.

Conclusion
To those players at camp, your hockey journey is a remarkable adventure filled with ups and downs, challenges, and triumphs. Whether you're pursuing an NHL dream or simply playing for the love of the game, remember that hockey is not just about the destination; it's about the journey.

Embrace each moment on the ice, savor the camaraderie of your teammates, and give your all in every practice and game. The road ahead may be uncertain, but your passion, dedication, and love for the game will guide you.

As you step onto the ice at camp, know that you're not alone. You're part of a vast hockey community that supports and believes in you. Trust in your abilities, work hard, and remember that, regardless of the outcome, you are a part of something truly special—a hockey family that spans the globe.

Embrace the journey, for it is yours to cherish, and it has the power to shape you into the player and person you aspire to be.

Congrats Trevor!

The Vancouver Canucks announced that they will retire Trevor Linden's No. 16 this season. As I mentioned in the past, I have always been a fan of his and this honour is well deserved. It also comes on a night where the Canucks play the Edmonton Oilers, a rival.

That just makes me angry; I am still dismayed over the Rangers' choice of nights to put Adam Graves in the rafters of the Garden. I was looking at the schedule and the random February 3rd date against the awful Atlanta Thrashers ensures that Graves' former teammates Craig MacTavish, Kevin Lowe and Wayne Gretzky won't be around to partake in the festivities (Edmonton plays Chicago and Phoenix plays Nashville) and, even worse, John Davidson won't be available to MC them (St. Louis plays Columbus). It isn't a knock against Sam Rosen, but John Davidson proved to be the better orator of the two and he was around for all of Graves' great NY years.

Had the Blueshirts done the right thing and scheduled it on November 10th against Edmonton, then all four of those guys could have been around to honour the consumate Ranger.

What a shame.

Foreshadowing Or A Mistake??

With today's announcements sealing the honours for Graves, Bathgate and Howell, the Rangers will have retired seven numbers: 1, 2, 3, 7, 9, 11, and 35.

However, on the Ranger homepage, there is a new poll that says, "By 2009, eight Rangers' jerseys will be retired. As of right now, how many more would still merit this honor?"

Does this mean that we will finally be seeing a official retirement ceremony for #99 this season?? Perhaps when Gretz comes through town with the Yotes on November 24th?

Or will another former Ranger head to the rafters? Jean Ratelle, Frank Boucher or Lester Patrick perhaps? Or did the Rangers web monkey just forget how to count? What do you think?

Corporate Event Scheduled

New York, August 21, 2008 -- New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the organization will retire jersey No. 9 in honor of Rangers great Adam Graves in an on-ice ceremony prior to the Rangers – Atlanta Thrashers game on Tuesday, February 3, 2009. This will be the last number retired from the 1994 Stanley Cup Championship team.

"Adam Graves is one of the most beloved players to ever don a New York Rangers sweater," stated Sather. "Off the ice, there isn’t a finer person. His effort and production as a hockey player was nothing short of triumphant and, even today, his dedication to the community is incomparable. We are proud to have Adam join his fellow 1994 Stanley Cup Champion teammates Mike Richter, Mark Messier and Brian Leetch, as well as legends Rod Gilbert and Eddie Giacomin, as his number is raised to the rafters of Madison Square Garden."
And the Rangers blow another chance to properly honour a hero, instead going for a money grabbing midweek guaranteed sell-out against a terrible team. So predictable. So sad.

EDIT: Apparently I closed my e-mail too fast to post this because they also anounced the Bathgate/Howell event:
New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the organization will retire jersey No. 9 and jersey No. 3 in honor of Rangers greats Andy Bathgate and Harry Howell, respectively, in an on-ice ceremony prior to the Rangers – Toronto Maple Leafs game on Sunday, February 22, 2009.
"Rangers history is enriched by players like Andy Bathgate and Harry Howell, who laid the foundation for what a Rangers player should be," stated Sather. "They will now take their rightful place in The Garden rafters alongside those players who have carried their tradition throughout the years."
I guess one out of two ain't bad ...

Cheating Off Of Chi-Town

You know when your teachers and your parents said that you shouldn't copy anyone else? If all of your friends were jumping off a bridge, you shouldn't follow?

Well, they were wrong. At least in this case.

The Rangers should follow the Chicago Blackhawks as the Hawks announced last week that they will retire a number for two players - the No. 3 of Keith Magnuson and Pierre Pilote. Montreal also did it a few years back with Yvan Cournoyer and Dickie Moore.

As Brian Leetch made Adam Graves nearly soil himself in front of over 18,200 people last season, the Rangers will retire number 9 at some point this coming season. In a separate announcement, the Rangers said that they will 'honour' Andy Bathgate (something fans have been asking for for a while and I had recommended a few months earlier).

Since the Rangers aren't the Islanders, ticket sales won't be a problem. Much like last season, this year is sure to sell out within moments after the September on-sale date (which has yet to be determined from what I can see).

Sadly, Bathgate doesn't have the name power that Graves does in today's day and age, even though Bathgate was by far the better player. That isn't to say anything bad about Graves whatsoever, believe me, but Bathgate was a league MVP, team captain, First Team All Star and Hockey Hall of Famer. Despite all of those achievements, when Bathgate is feted at the Garden, a small minority of the people in attendance, the old-time and die-hard fans who can still afford tickets, will know who he is. That is just a statement of fact.

So why not combine the two events?

By making it one big night you successfully honour the history of the team without insulting either player. Graves is that great of a human being that he would not be the least bit offended to share the spotlight and Bathgate deserves the accolade just as much. It would be a wonderful celebration of everything Blueshirts and for two men who wore the jersey so very well for so very long.

And one last thing: The Carolina Hurricanes announced they will retire Glen Wesley's number yesterday and had the game picked out in the press release (Feb. 17 vs. the Bruins, Wesley's first team). So what is taking the Rangers so long to tell the public which game Graves will be immortalized?

"Cheating Off of Chi-Town: Lessons in Urban Revitalization"

The Windy City, Chicago, is a bustling metropolis known for its deep-rooted history, vibrant culture, and iconic skyline. Beyond its renowned landmarks and bustling neighborhoods, Chicago's journey from industrial decline to urban revitalization holds valuable lessons for cities worldwide. In this article, we'll explore the remarkable transformation of Chicago and extract key insights that other urban centers can apply to their own revitalization efforts.

The Dark Days of Decline

During the latter half of the 20th century, Chicago, like many other American cities, faced a series of challenges that led to economic decline, population loss, and urban decay. Some of the key issues included:

Industrial Exodus: As manufacturing industries shifted overseas, Chicago's once-booming industrial sector lost thousands of jobs, leading to economic distress in many neighborhoods.

Population Flight: The city experienced a significant out-migration of residents, particularly from the South Side, as crime rates soared and schools deteriorated.

Decaying Infrastructure: Aging infrastructure, including public transportation and housing, required substantial investment and modernization.

Racial Tensions: Racial tensions and segregation persisted, contributing to social disparities and limited opportunities for many communities.

Lessons from Chicago's Revival

Chicago's remarkable resurgence did not happen overnight, but it serves as a case study for other cities looking to revitalize their urban cores. Here are some key takeaways:

Investment in Education: Chicago made significant investments in its public school system, aiming to improve educational opportunities for all residents. Strengthening the educational foundation is crucial for long-term growth and social equity.

Cultural Revival: The city capitalized on its rich cultural heritage by investing in the arts and cultural institutions. Museums, theaters, and festivals drew both residents and tourists, revitalizing neighborhoods and fostering a sense of community.

Infrastructure Overhaul: Modernizing transportation infrastructure, including the expansion of public transit and airport facilities, improved connectivity and accessibility for residents and visitors alike.

Economic Diversification: Chicago diversified its economy by nurturing a tech ecosystem, supporting startups, and attracting businesses from various sectors. Economic diversification helps create more stable and resilient urban economies.

Community Engagement: Engaging residents in the revitalization process was crucial. Community input, grassroots initiatives, and partnerships between the public and private sectors played a vital role in transforming neighborhoods.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Can other cities replicate Chicago's success?

While each city's challenges and opportunities are unique, the principles of investment in education, cultural revitalization, infrastructure improvement, economic diversification, and community engagement can be applied broadly. Adaptation to local conditions is key.

2. How did Chicago address its crime problem?

Crime reduction in Chicago was multifaceted, involving community policing, social programs, and job opportunities for at-risk youth. It also required collaboration between law enforcement agencies and community organizations.

3. Did Chicago's revitalization benefit all neighborhoods equally?

The revitalization efforts in Chicago initially favored some neighborhoods over others, but there has been a growing focus on equitable development and addressing disparities in recent years.

Chicago's journey from urban decline to revitalization offers a beacon of hope for cities facing similar challenges. By investing in education, nurturing cultural assets, modernizing infrastructure, diversifying the economy, and fostering community engagement, urban centers worldwide can draw valuable lessons from the Windy City's resurgence. As cities continue to evolve, the story of Chicago serves as a testament to the transformative power of strategic planning, resilience, and the collective efforts of residents, businesses, and policymakers in shaping a brighter urban future.
