Random Rangers: Catching Up With Kevin Miller

Rangers have drafted seven players with the last name Miller, including brothers Kevin and Kelly (the third brother, Kip, was picked by Quebec). Kevin was selected in the 10th round of the 1984 draft - 202nd overall - and he went on to have a 620 game NHL career, 103 of them in a Blueshirt. He compiled 57 points before being dealt to Detroit in March of '91 alongside Jim Cummins and Dennis Vial for none other than Joey Kocur and Per Djoos.

Kevin, who works in finance now, is also the vice president of the Greater Lansing Amateur Hockey Association. The GLAHA is currently holding a fund-raising raffle, with the prizes being several hockey jerseys. Info on that at the bottom but before we get to that, Kevin took some time to answer some e-mailed questions about his career:
SH: You got your start in the Ranger organization, what was that like?
KM: It was Great! The City and the Fans were Awesome. Definitely one of the best places to play in the NHL!!

SH: You were part of a youth movement that saw a number of guys grow in the system and graduate from the IHL to the NHL, including that Mike Richter fellow. There wasn't another real group of home-grown guys like that for 15 or so years and now, the son of one of your teammates (Brad Stepan's boy Derek) is at the forefront of another. What was it like being part of that and what is it that creates classes like that - drafting, coaching, luck, timing?
KM: Whenever you have a group come through with that type of progress it usually comes down to drafting and not trading away your drafts. Of course I was a late draft so the scout either was very good or they got lucky.

SH: You eventually played for the Islanders, why would you do such a thing?
KM: If I had a chance to do that again I would not sign with them!!

SH: Near the end of your playing career you spent three seasons in Davos - Rick Nash is currently killing time during this lockout with that club. Did you enjoy your experience?
KM: It was Great and one of my best hockey playing experiences! The town and the fans are awesome. It is beautiful and I loved playing there.

SH: Aside from the NASCAR-ish, ad-covered sweaters, what differences did you find in Swiss league play as opposed to NHL?
KM: Bigger ice surface so less physical. Very talented and speedy players. Great flow to the games.

SH: And what do you think about NHLers heading overseas during negotiations? I just saw that your cousin Drew (Red Wings forward and brother of Buffalo goaltender Ryan) has already headed to Scotland ...
KM: Guys don't want to sit around so they are taking jobs and going to have fun. It is very sad the owners have taken this position. The game was really growing and this will be another set back!

SH: One of the issues to be addressed in the current CBA battle is NHL participation in the Olympics. You played for Team USA when it was amateurs, what is your opinion - go back to that or stick with the current brand of stars?
KM: If they could have all teams use non professionals then I say go back to the college players, but most Europeans are paid very early!

SH: You went through the 1994 lockout, as a player what was that like?
KM: It was Brutal! Players like the money, but more importantly love to just play!

SH: What differences do you see between that one, 2004's and the current situation?
KM: No Different! No Hockey = CRAP!!

SH: Honest opinion - when do you think this lockout will end and why?
KM: Thanksgiving

SH: And I end every interview with a variation of the same question: over your NHL career, how much fun did you have?
KM: It was awesome and would do it all again if I had another chance. The sweat and pain paid off and was really worth it!

Kevin has mentioned the raffle on his twitter account but I borrowed the info from Off-Ice Instigating:

To benefit the Greater Lansing Amateur Hockey Association (GLAHA) the drawing will take place on December 15th (2012) and you DO NOT need to be present to win (so those not in Michigan can still enter). Here are the prizes up for grabs:

1st Prize: Signed Ryan Miller (Sabres) Jersey
2nd Prize: Signed Drew Miller (Red Wings) Jersey
3rd Prize: Michigan State University Jersey (In case you did not know 10 members of the Miller family have played hockey for MSU).All proceeds from this raffle will go to help support youth hockey in the great Lansing area.Checks can be made out to GLAHA and mailed to:

Kevin Miller
1475 Lake Lansing Road
Lansing, MI 48912
Please be sure to include:
Your Phone Number
How Many Tickets for Each Raffle

Toys For Tots

As you can see, Adam Graves will of course be there along with some alumni and current Rangers. Those are said to be Ryan Callahan, Michael Del Zotto, Christopher Higgins, Michal Roszival, Dan Girardi and Matt Gilroy but you never know. If it is like past years, two or three will be signing autos at a time. Meanwhile, Gravey shmoozes, poses for photos, signs autos ... everything that he always does, everything that makes him the amazing human being we revere him for being. And there will likely be the usual family fun - face painting and stuff. After taking that in, you can skate on the outdoor rink in Bryant Park - bring your own skates and a lock (for a locker) because renting both is costly but the ice time is free.

I've gone in the past - you guys know I'm big on good causes - and will likely stop by early on before making my way to Newark to root on the Canucks against the Devils. Mmmmmaaaaarrrrtttttyyyy. Mmmmmaaaaarrrrtttttyyyy. Mmmmmaaaaarrrrtttttyyyy.

Semper Fidelis True Blue

You folks can see that I shrug off capitalism here at Scotty Hockey, with the feeling being that the Garden gets enough of our money. If you want to spend any more (or have any more) of it then you should give to charity. While I always advocate donations to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (the link is permanently on the right side of the page), today I bring you another fantastic cause; I turn to fellow season subscriber Joe Burke to fill you in and hope that you will give what you can:
Dear Ranger Fans:

I would first like to thank Scotty for posting this letter. Scotty’s heart, like most Ranger fans, is in the right place. I would also like to thank my fellow fans for making this season a somewhat enjoyable experience. I say somewhat, because the final days of the Renney Era were pretty damn rough. Being a part of the Ranger community and sharing a couple of sarcastic laughs helped to ease the pain.

I have always maintained that the best Ranger teams reflect the characteristics of the typical Ranger fan, the Ranger teams that have achieved any kind of success have always been loyal, willing to suffer and sacrifice for the greater good, rewarded effort and integrity, and had a limited tolerance for b.s. It seems that Tortorella respects these qualities and is searching for players who exhibit them. This is good news.

That being said, I write to you in the hope of enlisting your support for another group of individuals who exhibit these same qualities, the United States Marine Corp. From May 1st through May 4th, I will be taking part in a Marine Corp Charity Bike Ride from the Iwo Jima Memorial located just across the Potomac River from Washington D.C. to Ground Zero here in New York City. The entire trip is a little less than three hundred miles.

I have the honor of riding with several Marine Corp combat veterans who have recently served in Iraq and Afghanistan. We are riding to raise money for the Marine Corp-Law Enforcement Foundation or MC-LEF, specifically, to meet the educational and medical needs of the children of Marines who have been killed in combat. A better cause there is not. If you are interested in the foundation and its goals please check out the link provided below for more details.

I know that this is not the best time to be asking for a charitable donation so anything you may be able to do is greatly appreciated. Ten, fifteen, twenty bucks, every little bit helps.

I can say with pride that the Ranger Fan always knows what is right, whether it is still giving Steven McDonald and his family a standing ovation twenty-three years later or always showing the utmost respect when the FDNY Color Guard comes out for the anthem. This is what sets us apart from other fans and I love it.

The easiest way to donate is online. From the MC-LEF’s main site, follow this link to donate.

We ask that people note in the comments box that their donation is in support of the 2009 Charity Bike Ride, and please state that the donation is coming from the New York Ranger Community. Whatever you want, “Let’s Go Rangers” or maybe you would like to express your feelings towards a certain television analyst for the Florida Panthers.

Thank you again.

With Gratitude

Joseph M. Burke

Question of the Day

For all of the joy and wonder that was last night's ceremony, I have to admit some disappointment.

How is it that the current players didn't give a gift? The (so-called) captains skated the No. 9 banner over and hooked it up so it could head to the rafters, but that was the only contribution that the current team made. That's it.

Are they so concerned with the current recession (of which they have virtually no chance of being laid off from, even though several deserve to be)? At the very, very least, how could they not pass a hat around and make a contribution to the Garden of Dreams in Adam's name? Is it because every couple of weeks one or two of them are called upon by the team's PR firm to take part in a coat drive or visit a hospital or something so they feel that that is enough of a contribution?

Adam Graves has class, it's time the current players show some.

Exploring the Significance and Impact of the "Question of the Day"
In today's fast-paced and information-driven world, the "Question of the Day" has become a common feature in various media outlets, social platforms, and even in personal interactions. It serves as a way to engage individuals, spark discussions, and provide food for thought. This article delves into the significance and impact of the "Question of the Day" phenomenon, exploring its various forms, its role in our lives, and how it has evolved in the digital age.

What Is the "Question of the Day"?
The "Question of the Day" is a simple yet powerful concept. It involves posing a thought-provoking question to an audience, whether it's a general question for public engagement, a poll to gather opinions, or a personal reflection prompt. These questions can cover a wide range of topics, from current events and politics to pop culture and personal development.

The format of the "Question of the Day" can vary, but it typically involves a concise and intriguing question that encourages people to respond, either mentally or verbally. This concept can be found in different contexts, such as:

Social Media: Platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram often feature daily or periodic questions to engage users. These questions can be used to start conversations, gather feedback, or simply entertain.

News and Media Outlets: Many news websites and publications incorporate a "Question of the Day" as a way to encourage reader participation and gauge public sentiment on important issues.

Educational Settings: In classrooms, teachers may use a "Question of the Day" to stimulate critical thinking and classroom discussion. These questions can relate to the day's lesson or be broader topics for exploration.

Personal Development: Some individuals adopt a daily habit of asking themselves a reflective question each morning to set intentions, improve self-awareness, or foster personal growth.

The Significance of the "Question of the Day"

The Messiah Delivers Again

As most of you know, I am a sucker for the nice, heart-warming hockey stories. I feel that we pay hockey players (through our tickets, gear, etc.) to entertain us on the ice. That they give back to the community in any way is just icing on the cake. But it certainly does help endear the players to the fans: Adam Graves wasn't one of the the best hockey players, just one of the best human beings and that's why we love him in New York. Well, his old captain Mark Messier did a good thing himself last weekend. Thanks to the CBC's Bring Home the Stanley Cup contest Messier brought the Cup to Adam Bourque, a young man with a disability in PEI (click on the link for the guy's winning entry - it really is quite touching). While I am sure he was compensated for his participation, Mess certainly didn't need the money. He went so far as to tell the Canadian Press that “it’s an incredible experience for me. That’s what the Stanley Cup is really all about, when you see the number of people it touches.”

And it sounds like Mess showed how much he cared by making sure Adam had a good time. Of course, while they played a game of street hockey, Mess had to score a goal on the kid but if he wasn't so competitive, he wouldn't be Mark Messier.

It's a great story on the eve of the Stanley Cup Finals and yet more proof that hockey players are the classiest of all athletes. I love this sport.

Just a quick post to point you to a link: Jiri Fischer will be back on the ice for the first time since collapsing during a Wings game three years ago. Its just a charity game, but then again, I don't really think there is such a thing as "just a charity game." It's really nice to know that the big Czech is well enough to skate again and hopefully the event will earn some money for Fischer's Healthy Hope Foundation.
