Be Ready For Bad Viewing

The Sports Video Group has a nuts and bolts look at the 3D broadcast planned for the Ranger/Isle game tomorrow here. For folks who are going to the game and are nonTV geeks who won't care about most of the piece, the important part is thus:
"the decision was made to place the cameras about three rows from the back of the lower level with a camera at center ice and cameras at the slash position but a bit more towards center ice then usual so that the nets around the rink are not in the way. Those three cameras will look over the glass since feedback from demo footage shot in Boston during the NHL Winter Classic found that scratches on the glass are more visible in 3D. But two additional cameras will be located behind the glass."
So, frankly, the people that were relocated, the people in the rows directly behind the cameras and those folks in the 100s, 200s and 300s will all have obscured views in some shape or form. When someone downstairs merely stands up for a few seconds he or she gets screamed at for blocking the view. Now they will have static cameras there throughout the night.

And it is all for people who are paying $20 - or anywhere from $30 to $100 less than the actually ticket holders who will be in the building proper - can watch the game on tv downstairs in the theater in 3d.

Nice, right?

Could this franchise give a bigger middle finger to the season ticket holders right about now? The owner and GM have zero public appearances, the coach is best known for blowing up at the media, and the team on the ice is a pathetic disgrace to the jerseys they wear. Yet again we have to pay for the bloated egos and wallets of the Dolan family.

Don't start with the "well, don't go then" nonsense. Loving the Blueshirt is something greater than the greedy ownership or idiotic front office ... to many of us, it is part of the foundation of ourselves - a life-time love affair, albeit a one-way romance. So we're going to keep buying tickets, we're going to keep heading to the Garden, we're going to keep cheering. We just don't have to like it.

And I don't know about you guys, but I certainly don't right about now ...

Bring Back Bobby!

With the news that the Bruins are going to keep the ad agency that gave them those great 'bear' commercials (if you haven't seen them, click here for my fav, h/t to Kukla for the news), I figured it was time to bring back Bobby.

MSG ran a few of those Bobby Granger commercials a few years back, then inexplicably ended the campaign. Most fans that I've spoken to got a kick out of them, I know I did. I put my personal fav below. But with a new season approaching, it is time for a new MSG ad campaign, and why not use Bobby? He was the quintessential everyfan who was funny and actually *gulp* showed some personality! What a concept, MSG and the Garden having personality. And Joe Micheletti and his bad puns don't count because he is horrendous. I've been asked, who do I loathe more: Tom Poti, Marek Malik or Wade Redden? Poti wins that one hands down but put him up against Micheletti and I would have a tough time deciding. Worst broadcaster in the biz.

But I digress.

Those spots were entertaining, interesting and started conversation. We would always ask, 'did you see the new one?' But they ran out real quick and stopped being aired a few years back. The last time I saw Bobby in person was two seasons ago when he was being kicked out of the Garden for confronting an obnoxious away fan (Flyers or Isles, I can't recall). Surely that couldn't have been what has kept them from producing his commercials; the Garden has gotten multiple lawsuits for much, much, much, much worse.

Let's face it, the commercials couldn't have cost too much to make and they were fun, and that is what hockey is supposed to be.

16-7-2: Beating the Bolts

I wish I could provide my usual coverage of tonight's Ranger shootout win over the Tampa Bay Lightning but I cannot. I read the recap but you know that never gives the full picture. As I mentioned in a previous post, I was at the Islander game and MSG has decided not to re-air the game this evening. According to the channel guide, there will be "Rangers in 60" from 6am-7am but that is it.

Instead of replaying it tomorrow - a slow sports day in New York - they are airing 10 straight episodes of the "50 Greatest Moments at MSG," that mediocre documentary series that fell far short of the hype. I will try to tape the early morning cut of the game (I'm not in the modern age with DVR/Tivo) and update this but can make no guarantees.

Instead, I ask you guys to use the comments to point out the big stuff and answer some questions:

*Was Michal Rozsival actually good? The box score had him assisting on both goals in regulation. How about Markus Naslund, who was credited with both goals and scored in the shootout ...

*One of those was a power play goal and yet the unit still went 1-6. Were they that bad?

*Were the Rangers playing for overtime, even with a one goal lead? Is that how Tampa tied it late?

*Nik Zherdev fought Steve Stamkos? Wtf??

*While there is little surprise that Colton Orr fought David Koci, was there any actual reason for it? Or was Orr lowering himself back down the level of a common goon and fighting another meathead for the sake of justifying their paycheck?

*The Rangers were outhit 26-11, what happened? Where was Cally?

*How was My Lil' Buddy Marek Malik??

*Are the PHW three stars worthy choices?
3-Evgeny Artyukhin - seven hits.
2-Michal Rozsival - two assists.
1-Markus Naslund - two goals and a third in the shootout.

Fixing MSG's Mistakes

Buried in the Post this weekend was a very interesting little tidbit on MSG's programming.

Phil Mushnick write in his column that:
"MSG, NY," the nightly catch-all studio show, as well as "Inside the Rangers" and other shows, will be kaput, as of Jan. 1. All were bleeding bucks while registering no ratings. MSG will expand Knicks and Rangers pre and post-game shows.

Cablevision, as always when it loses expensive programming, will pass some of the savings on to subscribers. Sure it will.

While I am slightly saddened because a friend of mine will lose some freelance work, the demise of "MSG, NY" and "Inside the Rangers" has been long coming. Both shows royally stunk, which is why the ratings were so bad.

I pointed out how poor "MSG, NY" was eight months ago and will not shed a tear now that its gone. It was a poor concept from the start. In this day and age where there is so many tools available to test show concepts before they go to air, I am just curious why the MSG bigwigs didn't use any of them before flushing so much money down the tubes. Music updates are great. Sports highlights are great. Together? Not so great. Not even so good. Actually ... really, really bad. The show had no flow and was a public relations vehicle for the Garden's properties rather than an actual news show.

And the same goes for "Inside the Rangers." Instead of being an actual look inside the locker room, it was a glossy advertisement. Rarely was there any candor from the players, everything seemed droll and rehearsed. Sure there was a gem or two, but overall it was frankly boring. And, let's face it, the host, Scott Lasky, was a tool. This show could have been great - look at Islanders Insider on MSG-Plus - but instead it was a benign, boring commercial for the team.

On the other side of the coin, MSG has done pretty well to address the need for a good hockey show with its "Hockey Night Live" panel program. I don't necessarily agree with the folks on the panel - Ron Duguay, Ken Daneyko and Butch Goring - but the concept is a good one. I just ask that they remove part-time host Deb Placey from it as she clearly acts the fool most of the time and is known to many as more of a puck bunny than a journalist. No complaints about Al Trautwig, as he does a solid job. He knows what he is talking about and when he doesn't, he admits it and asks the smart questions that other fans like himself would be asking.

Mushnick joked that the savings from these cuts would be passed on to the customers but even if a small portion was used to improve the actual game broadcasts and the pre- and post-game shows, then this is a win-win situation. The production folks who work on-site at the games know what they are doing and it shows. The only negative side is more face time for Joe Micheletti; perhaps he will go in the next wave of network cuts and Dave Maloney can take his spot in the booth.

One can only hope ...

Many thanks to my friend Greg for pointing out the Post piece; I would have totally missed it.

Title: Fixing MSG's Mistakes: A Path to Redemption

Introduction

Madison Square Garden (MSG) is an iconic venue with a rich history in the world of sports and entertainment. However, like any institution, it has had its fair share of missteps and controversies over the years. In this article, we'll explore some of MSG's notable mistakes, examine their impact, and discuss potential avenues for redemption.

I. The Penn Station Debacle

MSG's original location, at the site of the historic Pennsylvania Station, was torn down in the 1960s, a move many consider a grave architectural and urban planning mistake. The grandeur of the old Penn Station was replaced by an underground transportation hub and an above-ground arena. The loss of this architectural gem still resonates with New Yorkers today.

Impact: The demolition of Penn Station left a scar on New York City's architectural legacy, leading to a greater appreciation for preserving historic structures.

Redemption: While the original Penn Station cannot be resurrected, MSG can invest in public spaces and art installations around its vicinity to honor the site's history and provide a more inviting atmosphere for visitors.

II. Ticket Pricing and Accessibility

MSG has faced criticism for ticket pricing, often making events inaccessible to average fans. The high cost of attending games and concerts has led to concerns about exclusivity and a lack of diversity among attendees.

Impact: High ticket prices limit access to MSG events for many New Yorkers, contributing to a perception of elitism and exclusivity.

Redemption: MSG could implement pricing strategies that accommodate a wider range of fans, such as tiered pricing based on seating sections or offering discounted tickets to local schools and community organizations.

III. The Charles Oakley Incident

In 2017, a high-profile altercation between former New York Knicks player Charles Oakley and MSG security personnel resulted in Oakley's arrest and subsequent ban from the arena. The incident drew negative attention and raised questions about MSG's handling of former players.

Impact: The Oakley incident damaged MSG's reputation, with fans and players expressing frustration over the treatment of a beloved former player.

Redemption: To rectify this situation, MSG could publicly reconcile with Charles Oakley, involve him in community and player engagement initiatives, and ensure respectful treatment of former players and fans.

IV. Insufficient Investment in the New York Knicks

The New York Knicks, one of the NBA's most storied franchises, have endured a lengthy period of underperformance. MSG's perceived lack of investment in the team has frustrated fans and hampered the franchise's competitiveness.

Impact: The Knicks' struggles have alienated fans, resulting in declining attendance and a diminished fan experience.

Redemption: MSG could commit to a long-term plan for the Knicks, investing in player development, coaching, and front-office leadership to rebuild the team's reputation and competitiveness.

V. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1: How can MSG address its historical mistakes while embracing the future?

A1: By acknowledging its past missteps and actively working to rectify them, MSG can demonstrate a commitment to a more inclusive and fan-friendly future.

Q2: What steps can MSG take to enhance fan experiences?

A2: MSG can improve fan experiences by addressing ticket pricing, engaging with the community, and investing in the success of its sports franchises.

Q3: Can MSG regain its reputation as a beloved New York institution?

A3: Yes, MSG has the potential to regain its status as a beloved New York institution by making amends for past mistakes, embracing diversity, and prioritizing the fan experience.

VI. Conclusion

Madison Square Garden is a symbol of New York City, but it is not without its flaws and missteps. By recognizing its mistakes, making amends, and prioritizing inclusivity and fan engagement, MSG can embark on a path to redemption. Ultimately, it has the opportunity to regain its status as a beloved and iconic institution in the heart of the Big Apple.

MSG Fans' Most Wanted

I randomly got an e-mail from a random person who didn't put who they were working for alerting me, and all of you, to MSG's Fans' Most Wanted finale tonight with the all-time top six Rangers. Here is the e-mail:
Hello,
Wanted to reach out to let you and your readers know that tomorrow (Friday, August 15th), there will be a very special episode of FANS’ MOST WANTED on the MSG channel. The show will be devoted to the Rangers all-time starting 6 as voted by the fans! Watch highlights of the dream team's greatest plays, biggest stars and nastiest rivalries on Friday, August 15 at 8:00 p.m. on MSG.
For photos, videos, and more info about FANS' MOST WANTED: NY Rangers, head here: http://www.msg.com/fmwrangers/
Also, here’s a link to a trailer for the show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HShqxVQqoY
Have a great day!!
Best,
Carrie Lynch
Now, it is nice that this person has reached out, but it came in totally randomly and at the end of the season for FMW. The series, if you haven't watched it, is a random clip show hosted by Sam Rosen where they talk about the Fans' Most Wanted Rivalries, Goals, Saves, etc.

FMW is nice, except it didn't actually interview or include the fans or current players in the half hour shows. They put it together based on online polls and it was Sam talking to clips. How boring.

It was a fun way to keep hockey on the air over the summer but I think that MSG should put out programs to educate the fans. It is too late now, so for next year my pitch is to have a series of one hour programs called NYR Summer School. There is more than 80 years of history to cover that many people have no idea about and when better to educate people then when they are home?

But back to the present, and the FMW. I am going to miss it and catch a later replay but feel free to fill everyone in in the comments as to who the All-Time Starting Six are. My guess? Graves, Messier, Gilbert, Leetch, Beukaboom and Richter.

Thought Of The Day

Do you think the Rangers encouraged MSG to hire Joe Micheletti to encourage more ticket sales? I wouldn't put it past Dolan to make the viewing experience on television so incredibly awful that paying the ever-increasing Garden ticket prices becomes a welcome alternative to listening to Micheletti's inept, incompetent, annoying colour commentary.

Just a thought.

Interesting note though, if you search for Micheletti on MSG's new website, no results come up ... then again it's a flawed beta website and further testing shows nothing comes up on that search feature, but it was funny to see the first time.

5. Can a daily thought replace other forms of self-help or therapy?

While daily thoughts can be a valuable component of personal growth and well-being, they are not a substitute for professional help when needed. If you're facing significant challenges, mental health issues, or complex life situations, it's important to seek support from qualified professionals.

Incorporating a "Thought of the Day" into your daily routine is a simple yet powerful way to nurture inspiration, reflection, and personal growth. Whether you draw wisdom from existing sources or create your own daily reflections, this practice can help you stay motivated, focused, and emotionally resilient in a world filled with distractions and challenges. By starting your day with intention and a positive mindset, you can enhance your overall well-being and work towards achieving your goals.

Making MSG Relevant

MSG Network used to be the biggest, best regional sports network in America. Then they lost the Yankees to YES. Then they let the staff and equipment get old and outdated. In recent years they have attempted to clean up their image and, frankly, I don't think they have done a very good job. The Rangers and Knicks broadcasts are still well done, as is Mike Quick's High School Weekly ... it's just everything else that needs work.

Why does the network insist on regurgitating shows, while not replaying games? The Rangers play Pittsburgh on Tuesday - why not air some classic games between the two teams during the day and a Rangers in 60 of their last match-up? Instead there is a four hour high school basketball game of the week - something more appropriate for a day with the Knicks. I have tons of friends who tune in to the NHL Network just to watch classic games, so let's revisit Patrick Division matchups to add historical context to the rivalries. How many people in the Garden who yell Potvin Sucks have actually seen his hit on Ulf Nilsson? Tailoring the schedule towards key events helps draw viewers in and keep them longer. But no, we'll get more prepackaged filler like Fran's The Game 365 or that mediocre retrospective that was overhyped and underproduced: The 50 Greatest Moments at Madison Square Garden.

Enough with Fran Healy! This guy is 100 years old and his all-too-friendly interviewing style rarely gets to the heart of whichever subject he is discussing. Plus it sounds like he is drunk half of the time, which is less endearing than one would think. On the same token, why in the world does Boomer Esiason talk about anything outside of football?? He has no clue!

And now for my biggest annoyance with MSG Network: They took away Sportsdesk two years back and replaced it with MSG, NY - which they just expanded to a full hour seven days a week. I do not know a single person who actually watches this show, outside of the few minutes immediately following a Rangers game. And the only reason people watch that is because their talk-backs and locker room interviews are the closest thing to a post-game show. But no one sticks with it, as the show quickly changes the subject to music and entertainment. Frankly, MSG, NY blows and making it longer doesn't make it better.

Here is how it can be better:
*First off, split it apart. Enough with this attempt to combine sports with entertainment - it doesn't work. I am a Ranger fan and could care less about some crappy band that is playing at the Beacon Theater. I am a huge fan of what Eddie Trunk has done - the guy is a heavy metal journalism icon - but when I am looking for info on the Rangers, seeing him makes me want to puke. Make one show about the Rangers and the Knicks, and another about whatever show is rolling through the WAMU Theater or Radio City.

*Get a New Yorker to anchor the sports. Jason Horowitz, Jonathan Coachman and Scott Lasky are plastic television personalities who wish they were anchoring SportsCenter. Actually having someone with a New York accent, who is authentic in demeanor, would go miles towards making people care. If the anchor cares, the audience cares - that is why hockey highlights on ESPN sound so much better when done by huge Ranger fan Linda Cohn than by John Anderson, who believes hockey is a joke.

*Rangers On Demand (the online video service on the Rangers homepage) does a great job at getting daily locker room interviews and practice video. That service is basically a kid with a camera and a lap top. Why can't a network do the same and make it into a daily show? Don't give me a 15 clip of practice and 30 second quote at the top of MSG, NY; get in-depth information - talk to the trainers, equipment guys, beat writers ... passionate fans will eat it up and it will even help draw new fans. Inside the Rangers does a decent job, but they are just a half hour that doesn't even seem to be weekly. I know costs are high in a union shop like MSG, but if you aren't willing to pay them, why bother going on-air at all? If you put money in, you get money out. Hockey Night In New York has been an interesting experiment but it could be a lot more.

*Everyone got a kick out of the piece on Strudwick, Staal and Hollweg playing Rock Band because it was fun and showed the personalities of the guys we love to watch on the ice. Why not do more things of that ilk? Let's get the Euros drinking beers while watching soccer. Let's send Sean Avery and Ron Duguay clothes shopping and clubbing. Go apartment hunting with Brandon Dubinsky and Nigel Dawes. Sit down Chris Drury and Brian Leetch as they watch BU play BC in college hockey - or take them to Yankee Stadium for a game. I believe Shanny is part-owner of a lacrosse team and used to play - cross promote the Titans while showing off the old man's dexterity. These guys have personalities, let's see them.

*Why do we rarely get to see the Hartford Wolf Pack? The Garden owns the team and their arena, at the least they should show highlights of every game. And for that matter, Canadian television airs highlights of junior games so why don't we get regular updates on the Ranger prospects?

I am sure I can think of more things but its 4 a.m. and I need to crash. All of the ideas I riffed on about the Blueshirts pretty much work for Isaih's disasterpiece of a basketball franchise. The point is that we have a network that has two main cornerstones - the Knicks and the Rangers. Its time to start accepting that and catering to it, lest it lose more viewers than it already has.
