What's Goin' On ...

I just realized that I haven't put anything new here in 20 days, the biggest span between posts since this blog was founded four years ago.

On one hand I do want to apologize to all of those looking for content, I know that the appetite doesn't diminish despite the heat. On the other I must say it was nice to get away and unwind - this will be post #1,493 for me and this was feeling like a bit of an anchor at times.

But the truth of it is that there has simply been little worth ranting over of late. Or at least ranting in more than 140 characters - I still tweet up a storm.

The RFA action hasn't been contentious - we figured all of the guys would be back and are just waiting on Cally at this point. If he truly is captain material, he will sign a long term deal ahead of his arbitration hearing. As for the salaries, well, money matters just aren't interesting to me. Billionaires and millionaires arguing over a few hundred thousand bucks, yawn.

So where does that leave this blog as August nears? Well, there will certainly be some kind of commentary should Callahan go to arbitration - perhaps something like the trial I held for Brendan Shanahan years ago. You can expect a post when the team signs their seventh defenseman - even if it is just Steve Eminger. The Blueshirts finally have set their preseason schedule and that is spurring me to script some more posts. In the near future there will be individual looks at each of the Rangers' European opponents. There may or may not be the pre-season Peepin' Foes for the entire NHL - no telling if there will be time. Real life job is keeping me focused on the soccer pitch rather than the ice but I can assure you that this blog isn't going anywhere (for now).

A Monday For Mourning

After the Canucks lost last night, Vancouver fan Miss Kelli tweeted, "first person to say, 'It's only a game,' gets curb-stomped." I think many of us are empathetic to her, I know I am. That was just the emotion that I felt after the Rangers fell on Saturday. But I think it has begun it's transition from rage to simple sadness. As I walked out of work last night the security guard said to me, "sorry 'bout your Rangas man. Next year, next year.' And all I could do was shrug and thank him. The anger was gone, but hope clearly has not filled the void just yet.

Before it can, at least for me, there needs to be analysis, reflection and a bit of mourning for what could have been. Even though expectations from this corner were not high, there was always that little voice in the background that wished for (actually demanded) more. It led to the brand of harsh criticism that fills this space, and I can not thank all of you enough for reading it and adding your $0.02.

The fourth season worth of Scotty Hockey coverage will wrap up much the way the last one did, with a Facts Of Life look at every player and then the annual report card. Should the real world allow, there may also be coverage of the Cup Finals. So just to wrap this up, thanks again for stopping by, sucks that the Rangers' season is over and this blog ain't goin' nowhere so y'all come back now, ya hear?

Interviews

In recent days other bloggers have reached out to me for my take on the current, sad state of the Rangers. Patrick Hoffman at Goal Line Report just sent me a quick questionnaire today that you should check out here.

And the folks over at Second City Hockey produce a game-night program called the Committed Indian that they sell outside of the United Center - which is a brilliant idea considering that the programs issued by teams are such trash nowadays. They sent me a few questions for their Know Thy Enemy section for Wednesday's issue and I decided to re-publish it here for your weekend perusal. Keep in mind, I did it before Gilroy became Torts' latest scapegoat and Avery barely showed up ...

The Tortorella New York Media Meltdown has to be coming soon, right?

You would think so but outside of the occasional sharp words to his buddy Brooksie (NY Post writer Larry Brooks) Torts has been quiet, contemplative and defeated in front of the camera. I think that once the coach actually feels pressure of some kind - like when the team is in 11th or 12th going into the Olympic break - and the questioning stops being 'what happened?' and becomes 'why aren't you fixing things?' he will finally lose it.

King Henrik has not gotten off to the best of starts, and there's still the Olympics to go. Are Rangers fans worried about a total el-foldo from him?

It is quite remarkable to read the boards and blog comments with people coming out of the woodwork to throw Hank under the bus. We know his glove hand sucks, we know he can't wander from his crease and we know he gives up a Charmin soft goal every game or two - those should all be accepted facts by now. He is still among the best in the business but the tarnish comes off the crown when the team needs him to make the big save and he doesn't. With the paper thin offense struggling so badly to score, every save is a big one and Hank's mistakes are magnified that much more. Everyone will see yet again how great he truly is in Vancouver when he plays behind a Swedish team that has good team defense and stellar defensemen - two things he doesn't have in NY.

Brian Campbell and his big contract get a lot of stick here in Chicago, but at least we know what he does well. What is it exactly that Wade Redden does for a living?

You are putting me on, right? You really want an answer here? I can attempt to be serious - Redden tries to play a positional defensive style where he picks up loose pucks and makes the smart first pass to set the tempo of play. Or I can be honest and say that I feel he spent a lot of his salary on a expensive purse that he refuses to swing at opposing forwards as they skate past him. He doesn't shoot the puck, he is incompetent on the point on the power play and is almost universally loathed in NY while collecting more money than most of us will make in a lifetime. You know, if he was a one- or two-million-dollar-a-year fifth defenseman he probably wouldn't be as hated as he is now for being an eight million dollar waste of a perfectly good Blueshirt. He has been out of the lineup lately (something about a sore vagina I believe) and rookies Bobby Sanguinetti and Ilkka Heikkinen have both accounted themselves quite well in his spot - proving that Redden's contract may be the worst one ever given by Glen Sather (or any other GM). Ever. And that is really saying something.

On the bright side, Matthew Gilroy and Michael Del Zotto appear to have very bright futures. Talk about these young d-mens' games a little.

It is their bright futures that are a beacon to a better day. A day without Redden and Rozsival. A day without Sather. A day where the Rangers are actually worth the price of admission. Hobey (Gilroy) is 25 years old and plays a more mature style while MDZ is every bit the teenage phenom he has been made out to be. Hobey has been playing a sound defensive game that relies more on positioning than physicality and if he can pick off that pass or make that good stop, he has shown that he can go end to end and finish. When he can't, he almost disappears on the ice. MDZ is more of a quarterback on the play, making the good pass and occasionally cutting in for a give-and-go. Without a tough, physical defenseman on the Ranger roster, he has been ratcheting up his checking of late but hasn't learned when to properly pick his spots. I don't think that the Brian Leetch comparisons for either of these kids are fair as Leetchie had the best qualities of both of them in one package.

Sean Avery hasn't been annoying anybody this year, it seems. What's up?

Tortorella took Avery's manhood during last season's series against the Capitals and hasn't given it back. Tortorella's idiotic benching certainly castrated the one catalyst on the Ranger roster but, thankfully, Avery has shown signs of growing a new pair and returning to form in the last two weeks or so. The timing is great as the Rangers face the Islanders three times and the Flyers twice this month. And I'd imagine that he will have a field day with your young Mr. Kane, given the kid's ... talented ... siblings.

Are the Rangers going to be a playoff team?

I said before the season that they wouldn't and sadly haven't seen anything to change my mind. The Rangers are a deeply flawed team playing a poor system that simply can't stand up to the competition in the East. Most of the other teams work harder, most of the other teams have more talent up and down the lineup and most of the teams have an organization that puts winning - rather than making money - first.

I Love Hockey

Puck Daddy has been running a series over the last month where Wyshy asks folks for five reasons why they love hockey. So, unasked, I was thinking that I would chime in here on my own blog. But, I have to say that it has proven to be a helluva a lot harder of a task then I thought it would be. How the hell do you narrow it down to just five? Hockey is an obsession, a passion, a lifestyle, the perfect confluence of athletic prowess, violence, grace and honour ... I simply couldn't pick five singular things.

Instead, I figured I would pick five games - no, moments in time - that encapsulate that love:

1- October 20th, 2007: Rangers vs. Bruins.
The B's won 1-0 in a shootout but my trip to Boston was still well worth it (even if I was annoyed and exhausted afterwards). Now my fondness for penalty killing is well acknowledged in this space and that afternoon had two incredible plays. Now I can't remember which came first but Marty Straka blocked a Zdeno Chara slap shot, broke his wrist, stayed out on the ice, blocked another shot and finally went to the bench when the puck was cleared. The second instance I found up on YouTube - Marc Savard congratulating Hank for robbing him. Probably the single greatest save I've witnessed live, followed by an honourable act of appreciation by an opponent. And to top it off, Travis Roy did the ceremonial puck drop prior to the game. His story alone makes you appreciate this sport.

2- October 1st, 2008: Rangers vs. Metallurg Magnitogorsk.
At the time I said it felt like a Miracle and a year later it still holds up as an incredible experience. Picture it: Metallurg fans are having the times of their lives waving flags and going crazy as their team went ahead 3-0. Surrounded by quiet German-speaking Swiss, I yell at the Russians that 'we won in Rocky, we'll win here!' And we did! Thanks to Ryan Callahan, who completed the improbable comeback with the game-winner in the final seconds. I. Lost. My. Mind. That kind of euphoria ... words can't do it justice. And all because one hockey team beat another one.

3- September 23rd, 2001: Rangers vs. Flyers.
The second Sunday after 9-11, I went to the second preseason game in the Garden after the attacks. Now, everyone remembers the home opener against the Sabres on October 7th - which was so poignant - but this had it beat, for me at least and I was in the building for both. It was mostly empty on this afternoon but you couldn't tell from the ovations given the firefighters, cops and construction workers when they were shown on Gardenvision. People had signs memorializing the lost - I still get choked up thinking about it. We Ranger fans, and New Yorkers in general, may be (rightly) known for our abrasive, crass nature but when it comes to respecting and honouring our own we get it right, and we do it better than anyone else. The unifying nature of sports is well documented but experiencing it is something different and truly incredible.

4- September 27th, 2006: Rangers vs. Bruins.
This was an unremarkable preseason game that, frankly, I can't remember much of. However, the occasion was personally monumental. It was the first ever game that I took my dad to as a season ticket holder. For that, it will always be special. My first memory as a child - I was maybe three, three and a half years old - is watching a Rangers/Rockies game with my dad, who was yelling 'shoot the puck Barry' at the tv. Years after that my dad worked long hours and was always very busy but he would always sit with me, eat oranges and hard pretzels while we watched Sam and JD on MSG. Every once in a while he would land awesome seats and we would go to the Garden and always came away with a good story - like when I told St. Louis head coach Mike Keenan that he sucked and was a traitor and got a surprised look back, something my dad still laughs about to this day. So this preseason game, when I finally got my season tickets and finally took him to the Garden was pretty special.

5- June 14th, 1994. Rangers vs. Canucks.
The only one of these five games that I wasn't at so I will leave it to the experts: "The waiting is over, the New York Rangers are the Stanley Cup champions!!! And this one will last a lifetime! No more curses, this is unbelievable! These people have waited a long time. Fans, players, coaches ... unbelievable! Let the celebration begin! What a series, two fabulous teams. Vancouver lost and hockey was the winner. For the New York Rangers and their supporters no more 1940, it's gone, congratulations Rangers. The 1994 New York Rangers have done it and for every Ranger who ever put on a uniform, they can stand with pride. What a moment." Thank you Sam, thank you JD ... I couldn't have said it better.

Sure, there have been other great games - when my ex got me great Ranger/Canadien playoff tix, I went to the first Winter Classic, any of those nights with my dad - but these five stand out. Which games have you gone to that stand out?

Shameless Promotion

I was just going to let it slide but my competitive nature is forcing me to mention it. The fine folks at the NHL Arena have been holding a tournament for the best hockey blogs. My first round opponent is the Canucks blog Waiting For Stanley. It's a good blog, with an absolute ton of content on the Nuckleheads. Now I don't blind you with bs, I just give you the facts and my take on them. If that is your thing, vote for me. If you like flash over substance and quantity over quality, vote for him. Actually don't. Just don't vote. Yeah, that's better ...

We beat those Western Canadian bastards in '94, let's do it again.

Programming Note

I am flying to overseas tonight. I am (sadly) fully expecting to not be able to see MSG in London so don't expect game wraps of the rest of the exhibition games on this side of the pond. As per usual, I highly recommend the guys on the blog-roll on the right for updates. Sam from Rangers Report has been fantastic and looking over his stuff, we seem to agree on a lot of points.

As I don't want to chase you guys away, you should feel free to check out the Four-casts I did for each team and keep coming back here for some goodies: I will have my laptop with me on the old continent so I'll try to put up something from the two games in Switzerland, which should be wild. And there may even be a scouting report of a British Elite League game if I don't get lost in the English countryside. I also might pop in to Unprofessional Foul to share my first experience at a Arsenal match so keep an eye out for that. Wish me luck!

The End Of Times?

As I search for something else to occupy my time now that the Cup has been raised, the New York Times was there to give me a momentary distraction. The Times asked what we learned this season and what do we have to look forward to next year in their latest edition of Hockey Night in Blogdom. Click here to check it out and scroll down for my answers. I don't know what the future holds for the HNiB posts now that the season is over (I hope they continue!) but if its the last one, I think I went out on a high note.

While I was over there admiring my handiwork, I also read a great article by Lynn Zinser on the Rangers draft philosophy as compared to that of the Stanley Cup Champion Red Wings. Check it out, I have to say that she seems to have hit the nail on the head. I will, of course, address the draft a few more times in coming days but for now feel free to check out two really good mock drafts - Going Five Hole's and My NHL Draft. At the moment I have to say I disagree with the former and agree with the latter as I think a defenseman will be picked either in the first or second round by the Blueshirts, but I still have quite a bit of research to do.

In another programming note, I did my Scotty Hockey Three Stars already but keep an eye out for my first and second team All Stars - the best of the best across the NHL who embody the qualities I hold so dear: the unheralded, real reasons that teams win like the defensive defenseman, the grinder, tough guy, etc.

Just because it is supposed to go over the 90 degree mark here in New York doesn't mean that the ice has melted!

"The End of Times? Exploring the Phenomenon of Apocalyptic Thinking"

Throughout history, humanity has been fascinated by the idea of an impending cataclysmic event that would bring about the end of the world as we know it. This concept, often referred to as "apocalyptic thinking," has manifested in various forms across different cultures and eras. In this article, we will delve into the phenomenon of apocalyptic thinking, its psychological and sociological aspects, and its enduring presence in our modern world.

FAQ 1: What is apocalyptic thinking, and where does it originate?

Apocalyptic thinking is a belief in a prophesied catastrophic event that will result in significant destruction, followed by a transformative or redemptive phase. It has its roots in religious and mythological traditions, with notable examples including the Biblical Book of Revelation, the Mayan calendar's predictions, and Norse mythology's Ragnarok.

FAQ 2: Why are humans drawn to apocalyptic narratives?

Several factors contribute to the human fascination with apocalyptic narratives:

1. Psychological Intrigue: The idea of a world-changing event piques our curiosity and stimulates the imagination.

2. Existential Concerns: Apocalyptic scenarios force individuals to confront existential questions about life, death, and meaning.

3. Societal Reflection: Apocalyptic narratives can serve as a lens through which societies examine their values, behaviors, and potential consequences.

Historical and Cultural Variations

Apocalyptic thinking has evolved over time and can take various forms:

1. Religious Apocalypse: Many religious texts describe divine judgments and end-time scenarios. For example, Christianity anticipates the Second Coming of Christ and the Day of Judgment.

2. Environmental Catastrophe: In recent years, concerns about climate change and environmental degradation have sparked apocalyptic narratives centered on ecological collapse.

3. Technological Apocalypse: With advancements in technology, some fear the unintended consequences of artificial intelligence or nuclear warfare leading to global devastation.

4. Pandemics and Disease: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to discussions of apocalyptic thinking, with some viewing it as a harbinger of more deadly pandemics to come.

5. Political and Social Collapse: Dystopian narratives often depict apocalyptic scenarios resulting from political strife, societal breakdown, or economic collapse.

The Psychology of Apocalyptic Thinking

Apocalyptic thinking can be understood through psychological lenses:

1. Cognitive Bias: Confirmation bias leads individuals to seek evidence supporting apocalyptic beliefs, reinforcing their convictions.

2. Coping Mechanism: Some people turn to apocalyptic beliefs as a way to cope with anxiety or existential dread.

3. Group Dynamics: Apocalyptic thinking can strengthen group cohesion as individuals seek like-minded communities for support and validation.

FAQ 3: How do individuals reconcile apocalyptic beliefs with the absence of prophesied events?

When apocalyptic predictions fail to materialize, individuals and groups may reinterpret or revise their beliefs. This phenomenon, known as "cognitive dissonance," allows adherents to maintain their faith despite apparent contradictions.

Modern Expressions of Apocalyptic Thinking

Apocalyptic thinking persists in the contemporary world, often manifesting in various forms:

1. Pop Culture: Movies, television series, and literature frequently explore apocalyptic themes. Examples include "The Walking Dead," "Mad Max," and "The Road."

2. Conspiracy Theories: Some conspiracy theories, such as those involving global elites or secret societies, are rooted in apocalyptic narratives.

3. Technological Concerns: Discussions about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence, cyberattacks, and biotechnology can mirror apocalyptic narratives.

4. Climate Change Discourse: The urgency surrounding climate change is often framed in apocalyptic terms, emphasizing the catastrophic consequences of inaction.

: The End is Always Just the Beginning

Apocalyptic thinking continues to captivate human minds, serving as a mirror reflecting our anxieties, hopes, and desires. While the specifics of apocalyptic scenarios may change, the underlying human fascination with transformation, redemption, and the unknown remains constant. Whether seen as a warning or a testament to human resilience, apocalyptic thinking reminds us of our capacity to imagine, adapt, and navigate the uncertainties of an ever-changing world.

Oops and What Next?

Sorry to anyone who may have wanted to leave a comment on the last post. I must have accidentally turned it off. It's back on so leave some input!

While you are at it, feel free to drop me an e-mail as to what you want to see at this very blog this summer. I am considering a gimmick or two to fill in for those long summer days but nothing is certain.

I also will put something together and cover the Stanley Cup Final. I absolutely loathe the Pens right about now so be ready for some Detroit love. Even if there wasn't a dislike for Cindy's squad, as a Ranger fan, I would feel obligated to cheer for the other Original 6 squad - should they make it past the Stars.

Oops and What's Next? Navigating Life's Unexpected Turns

Life is a journey filled with twists and turns, and it's not uncommon to encounter unexpected obstacles and setbacks along the way. When things don't go as planned, it's easy to feel disheartened, frustrated, or even overwhelmed. However, it's essential to remember that setbacks are a natural part of life, and how we respond to them can often define our future success. In this article, we will explore the nature of unexpected setbacks, how to cope with them, and what steps you can take to move forward when life throws you a curveball.

Regardless of their nature, setbacks can be emotionally and mentally challenging, as they force us to adjust our expectations and reevaluate our strategies.

FAQ 2: Why Do Unexpected Setbacks Happen?

Setbacks are a natural part of life because the future is inherently uncertain. Many factors contribute to unexpected setbacks, including:

External Factors: Events beyond our control, such as natural disasters, economic downturns, or accidents, can lead to setbacks.

Human Error: Mistakes, misjudgments, or poor decisions can also result in setbacks.

Change: Life is dynamic, and change is constant. Changes in circumstances, relationships, or goals can lead to unexpected setbacks.

Random Chance: Sometimes, setbacks occur due to sheer randomness or bad luck.

Mindset plays a significant role in how we respond to setbacks. A growth mindset, characterized by the belief that challenges and failures are opportunities for learning and growth, can be highly beneficial. With a growth mindset, setbacks are viewed as temporary and manageable obstacles rather than insurmountable roadblocks. Cultivating a growth mindset can help individuals approach setbacks with resilience, adaptability, and a positive outlook.

Life is unpredictable, and unexpected setbacks are an inevitable part of the journey. However, how we respond to these setbacks can greatly impact our future success and happiness. By acknowledging our feelings, seeking support, and adopting a growth mindset, we can navigate setbacks with resilience and determination. Remember that setbacks are not the end of the road but rather opportunities for growth, learning, and the discovery of new paths forward. So, when life throws you an "oops," take a deep breath, assess the situation, and embrace the possibilities that lie ahead.

Thoughts On Game 4

First off, with no Betts and no Avery the lines will be reconfigured. Here is what I would go with:
Straka-Dubinsky-Jagr
Sjostrom-Gomez-Callahan
Orr-Drury-Shanahan
P.A. Parenteau-Moore-Dawes
Do I think Renney go with that? No, I am pretty sure that we will see Petr Prucha back in and I don't think Ryan Hollweg will be back.

On Holly, I really believe that people are being too hard on him for the boarding penalty on Petr Sykora. Was it a bad penalty, at a bad time? Yep. Did we lose because of it? Absolutely not. The team was terrible for most of the game. It wasn't Hollweg who just stood still, watching the Penguins pass the puck around before scoring both their fourth and fifth goals. People are quick to jump on him for being a one-dimensional goon but they have forgotten how he provided a spark during any one of those games during the midseason doldrums.

A great moment that I didn't address last night - the Staal on Staal hit. That was awesome. While I am sure their parents weren't too happy, I am sure it wasn't the first time the boys hit each other and it pretty much served to level the ledger after Jordan's goal on Sunday.

But back to the future: there shouldn't be much of a change in game-plan for Game 4. Let's face it folks, this series was pretty much a post and a whistle away from the Rangers having a 2-1 lead despite playing far below their capabilities. And there is absolutely no reason not to empty the tank and leave everything out on the ice in Game 4. These guys will have all summer to recover (or two days until a Game 5).

If it does prove to be the final game of the year, be sure to keep checking back here because I won't take much of an offseason. There will be report cards, Scotty Hockey All Stars, Stanley Cup coverage, some draft and free agency coverage and more!

Analyzing the Pivotal Game 4: Strategies, Performances, and the Road Ahead

In the world of sports, pivotal moments can define championships. Game 4 of any playoff series often holds special significance, as it can serve as a turning point that shapes the rest of the competition. In this article, we'll delve into the intricacies of Game 4, exploring the strategies employed, standout performances, and what this critical juncture means for the series moving forward.

FAQ 1: Why is Game 4 Important in a Playoff Series?

Game 4 is often seen as a turning point because of its potential to level the playing field or provide a commanding lead. The team that wins Game 4 may gain momentum, while the losing side may find itself facing an uphill battle. It's a psychological and strategic battleground where each team must adapt and showcase their resilience.

FAQ 2: What Are the Key Strategies in Game 4?

Adjustments: Teams analyze the first three games and make necessary adjustments in terms of tactics, line combinations, and defensive schemes to exploit weaknesses or counter opponents' strengths.

Goaltending: Goaltenders are under immense pressure to make crucial saves. A standout performance by a goaltender can be a game-changer.

Special Teams: The effectiveness of power plays and penalty kills can swing the momentum. Teams focus on discipline and capitalizing on opportunities with the man advantage.

Physicality vs. Finesse: Coaches decide whether to play a more physical or finesse game, depending on their team's strengths and the opponent's style.

Line Matching: Coaches strategically deploy their lines to gain favorable matchups, exploiting weaknesses or neutralizing key opponents.

FAQ 3: How Did the Teams Perform in Game 4?

Game 4 saw both teams displaying their strengths and weaknesses. The first period was a defensive battle, with few high-quality scoring chances. Goaltenders on both sides made critical saves, highlighting their importance in such pivotal games.

The second period witnessed a surge in offensive action. Team A capitalized on a power play, displaying efficient puck movement and creating opportunities from the slot. However, Team B responded with a breakaway goal, showcasing their speed and transition game.

The third period was intense, as Team A desperately sought to extend their lead, while Team B pressed for an equalizer. Team A's defensive strategy, which included shot-blocking and effective backchecking, proved crucial in maintaining their lead. In contrast, Team B struggled to break through Team A's defensive shell.

FAQ 4: What Role Did Individual Performances Play in Game 4?

Individual performances often make or break Game 4. In this particular matchup, several players stood out:

Goaltenders: Both goaltenders were outstanding, making critical saves to keep their teams in the game. Goaltender A for Team A showcased remarkable composure, while Goaltender B for Team B exhibited quick reflexes.

Power Forward: Team A's power forward, Player X, was a physical presence. They scored a crucial goal by capitalizing on a rebound and created space for their linemates.

Playmaker: Player Y of Team B displayed exceptional playmaking abilities, registering multiple assists and creating scoring opportunities with precise passes.

Defensive Stalwart: Team A's defenseman, Player Z, was a shot-blocking machine and effectively disrupted Team B's offensive rushes.

FAQ 5: What Does Game 4 Mean for the Rest of the Series?

Game 4's outcome significantly impacts the series. If Team A emerged victorious, they now hold a 3-1 series lead, placing tremendous pressure on Team B to mount a comeback. Team A may have gained the psychological edge and can afford to play a more defensively oriented game in the subsequent matches.

Conversely, if Team B secured the win, the series is tied at 2-2, effectively resetting the competition. This can rejuvenate Team B's confidence and make the remainder of the series highly competitive. Game 5 becomes a critical battleground as both teams strive to seize control.

Game 4 in a playoff series is not just another contest; it's a pivotal moment where strategies collide, standout performances shine, and the series' direction can be altered. The outcome of Game 4 ripples through the remainder of the competition, affecting players' mindsets, strategies, and the ultimate quest for a championship. As fans, we eagerly await the drama and excitement that Game 5 promises, knowing that it will be shaped by the events of Game 4.

Yahoo-oo-oo!

So super blogger Greg Wyshynski has recently taken over the so-called NHL Experts Blog over at Yahoo!

Greg was kind/insane enough to ask me to write an obituary for the dearly departed New Jersey Devils. So I did. Let me know what you think ...

First the New York Times, now Yahoo!, and next?

The world!!!

Yahoo-oo-oo! The Rise, Fall, and Evolution of Yahoo

Yahoo, with its iconic yodeling jingle, was once a pioneering force in the early days of the internet. It played a pivotal role in shaping how people interacted with the web and was synonymous with the dot-com era. However, the journey of Yahoo has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride, filled with ups, downs, and dramatic twists. In this article, we will delve into the rise, fall, and ongoing evolution of Yahoo.

FAQ 1: What Was Yahoo's Original Purpose and How Did It Start?

Yahoo was founded in January 1994 by Stanford University students Jerry Yang and David Filo. Initially, it began as a hobby project called "Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web." The duo created a directory of web pages to help users navigate the growing internet. It was essentially a manually curated list of websites organized into categories.

Yahoo's Early Success

Yahoo's simple directory quickly gained popularity. In 1995, it received its first major investment, and by 1996, it had gone public. The company's early success was emblematic of the dot-com boom, and its stock price soared.

FAQ 2: What Were Some of Yahoo's Milestones in the Early Years?

1997: Yahoo introduced its web-based email service, Yahoo Mail, which became one of the most popular email platforms globally.
1998: Yahoo launched Yahoo Messenger, a widely-used instant messaging service.
1999: Yahoo acquired GeoCities, a web hosting service, and Broadcast.com, a streaming media company.
2000: Yahoo's market capitalization briefly exceeded $100 billion.
The Dot-Com Bubble Burst and Challenges

The dot-com bubble burst in the early 2000s, and Yahoo faced its share of challenges. Advertising revenue, which was the company's primary source of income, plummeted. Many dot-com companies went bankrupt, and Yahoo had to reevaluate its strategy.

FAQ 3: What Were Some of Yahoo's Attempts at Diversification?

Acquisitions: Yahoo made numerous acquisitions, including the purchase of popular photo-sharing site Flickr and social bookmarking service Delicious.
Yahoo Search: The company aimed to compete with Google in the search engine market and launched Yahoo Search.
Media and Content: Yahoo invested in original content, including news, sports, and entertainment.
The Marissa Mayer Era

In 2012, Yahoo appointed Marissa Mayer as CEO. Mayer brought a fresh perspective to the struggling company. She aimed to revitalize Yahoo by focusing on mobile, design, and user experience.

Yahoo's Demise and Acquisition by Verizon

Despite Mayer's efforts, Yahoo continued to struggle. In 2016, Yahoo disclosed two massive data breaches, which severely damaged its reputation. As a result, Verizon Communications acquired Yahoo's core internet business for $4.48 billion in 2017.

FAQ 4: What Happened to Yahoo's Brand and Services After the Acquisition?

Verizon merged Yahoo with AOL to create a new company called Oath, later rebranded as Verizon Media Group. Under Verizon's ownership, many Yahoo services were shuttered or sold, including Yahoo Messenger and Yahoo Groups.

The End of an Era

In 2021, Verizon sold Yahoo and AOL to a private equity firm, Apollo Global Management, for $5 billion. This marked the end of Yahoo's journey as an independent entity.

FAQ 5: Is Yahoo Still Relevant Today?

While Yahoo's prominence as a tech giant has waned, it still operates various online properties, including Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Finance, and Yahoo Sports. These services continue to serve millions of users worldwide. However, Yahoo's glory days of being a dominant internet player are firmly in the past.

Yahoo's story is a testament to the volatile nature of the tech industry and the ever-evolving landscape of the internet. From its humble beginnings as a web directory to its meteoric rise during the dot-com boom and subsequent struggles, Yahoo has experienced it all. While the company may no longer be the internet giant it once was, its legacy lives on in the evolution of the digital age and the enduring memory of that unforgettable yodeling jingle: Yahoo-oo-oo!

Two Quickies

I should be flattered but was given no credit so I will just point out that New York Times writer Lew Serviss blogged today over at Slap Shots that the All Star Game should be the annual outdoor game.

Sound familiar? It should for you 150-or-so regular readers as I've mentioned it four times since the Winter Classic (not including this instance). Glad to see that the Gray Lady is in touch with the times ...

And the other item I wanted to show you guys is that our boy Jagr apparently is mad at NBC after analyst Mike Milbury said in an interview that it is Jagr's fault that the Rangers have played so far below potential. After hearing those comments, Jagr refused to participate in a canned interview that the network would have used as part of their coverage of the 12:30p game tomorrow against the Bruins. It was truly a professional move by Jagr (sarcasm), that showed that he can still be a moody, petulant child when he wants to. He couldn't rise up and be the bigger man there, just like he is having so many troubles being the big man on the ice. For shame.

Guess I won't be getting that one-on-one with Jags either. Gosh-diddly-darn-it!!
