The Avery Era Is Over (for good this time)

I'm not sure what there is to say that I haven't already ranted on Twitter. John Tortorella always hated Sean Avery and, with Sather's summer signings, finally had the opportunity to get rid of him and he used it.

That simple.

The nonsense about Erik Christensen getting the job because of his versatility is just that, nonsense. Yes, Christy can play center and wing, but he can also lose the puck at the lightest touch and not play defense. And show up for two, maybe three games a season. And be a supremely smug jerk in interviews and to fans. And not be Sean Avery.

The writing has been on the wall since Torts was hired but it still is sad that this day has come to pass. The head coach of a team should do everything he can to make the team better, to make it win games - not to placate his own ego and carry out a personal vendetta.

I, an avowed Avery supporter who has gone to bat for him before, fully admit that he didn't perform up to par last season - I gave him a C- in my report card - but he was still a valuable player for the team.

As I wrote in my Facts of Life:
The Rangers were 12-4-1 when he registered a point. ... Torts never gave him the chance to gain any chemistry with his teammates, bouncing him around the lineup. And the super pest was stupefyingly scratched for several games down the stretch and once during the playoffs (Torts clearly not learning his lesson from 2009).
I truly hope that Sean is able to find another NHL job, just not in the Atlantic division. Perhaps there is a GM out there willing to look beyond the bad reputation and see a voracious forechecker, a guy who actually stands up for his teammates and a lightning fast skater. Off the ice he is also great for public relations as he is great with the fans and a charitable person.

Hopefully Avery can find someone who believes in his ability and puts him in a position to achieve, not someone who refuses to give him a fair shot. Best wishes to a good and loyal Blueshirt.

Weighing In

There are people today on call-in shows and blogs questioning whether the Rangers should bench Sean Avery for Game 4, given his penchant for penalties last night.

I feel that I have to offer my opinion: Those people are insane.

Avery was one of four Rangers who played his hardest yesterday - Hank, Betts and Cally being the others (all of the defenseman took turns watching plays). I keep Avery in the lineup – even with the high likelihood of two or three minors called against him deserved or not. We have the top penalty killers in the NHL, what he brings is well worth it. Did any of these folks out there actually watch the games prior to Sean's arrival? Do you want this series to end in six, losing four straight?

As I said in the comments over at Blueshirt Banter where a Ranger fan actually raised the debate, if you want a bold move you don't bench Avery. Try benching the still injured Drury. Try benching the ineffective Zherdev. The ineffective Mexican’t Gomez who aborted every damned attack single handedly. Try winning a power play faceoff for once for chrissake. Try not going offsides 18 times a game. Benching one of the four players who show up for every game is just stupid, no matter how many penalties he is ‘awarded’.

Avery's presence is worth it even if the Blueshirts should start Game 4 shorthanded after sending Colton Orr over to send the message that showing up your opponent at center ice of your own building (below) is utterly unacceptable.

Sean Rocks!!

From the awesome Eric Duhatschek of the Globe today (h/t to Kukla):
As [Sean Avery] emerged from the dressing area at the back of the visiting dressing room, he asked if a TSN camera were present.

When he saw that it was, Avery stepped in front of the microphones, didn't wait for a question to be asked and started talking.

“I'm really happy to be back in Calgary; I love Canada,” began Avery. “I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my (former girlfriends).

“I don't know what that's about, but enjoy the game tonight.”

And with that, Avery walked away and didn't stick around to explain any further.

This guy sells hockey better than the Cindy and Gina show in Pittsburgh. There is nothing, NOTHING like injecting some hate into hockey and Sean has done it better than anyone this millennium. This sport has gone far towards Gary Bettman's ideal of a corporate, clean, midwest soccer mom-approved game between robots and Avery's antics help us remember how wonderfully entertaining it could be.

If seeing him face Elisha's new boyfriend Dion (and the "boring" Jarome Iginla) doesn't get you to tune into tonight's Dallas/Calgary game, I don't know what will.

Causin' Chaos: Sean Avery On The Island

The New York Islanders gave me a photo pass for this evening's game against the Dallas Stars. My assignment for them? Get a good shot of Doug Weight. I did that. In fact, I used my dumb luck mad skills and came away with a good number of decent shots not only of my primary target, but of several other players. But since the spotlight heading into this game was on one player in particular, I made sure to get him.

So here is Sean Avery's night at the Coliseum, in pictures:

The only one I want to put a caption on is this last one. Avery wasn't talking trash and starting trouble with Islander fans, he had thrown his glove up into the crowd towards a kid wearing a Ranger jersey. Of no surprise, an older female Islander fan made the grab and refused to hand it over. Avery tried to get her to pass it along but, unsurprisingly, had no luck. Either way, it was a nice gesture by him.

8-7-1: Smacking Cindy And Co. Around

The Rangers won tonight, yay! My Scotty Hockey jersey is 5-0 at games so far. Boo ya and all that. I am stuck on a train that is stopped due to a 'pedestrian accident' so I have some time to craft my rants. Something tells me they still will be random ...:

*In warmups Dubi was tossing pucks up into the crowd to kids. It is always heartwarming and proved to be good karma as the kid scored his first goal and had a helluva game.

*Other warmup notes (that I scribbled on a napkin):
-Georges Laraque did his hair up in cornrows now; how ridiculous -- it still won't give him any ghetto cred, he plays hockey.
-The pucks used during the warmups are no longer plain black, they have a NHL shield on them. Its a nice touch and makes for a great souvenir.
-Marc Andre Fleury's pads looks like the color of pee after you have some vitamins and not enough water. Gross.
-Do you think Mark Recchi and Gary Roberts are members of AARP yet? Recchi skated like he was wearing Depends and Roberts played like a grumpy old man - and thankfully acted like it when Sean pissed him off. Go Sean!

*Marcel Hossa. Goddammit. Dude. Seriously. You suck. Yes, there were two nice board-shaking hits. Yes, there were also two, maybe three serious scoring chances that you blew. With Straka out this is your time to shine so better shape up because Dawesie has played great and earned that roster stop of yours.

*I have to mention Cindy Crosby. The Rangers did a really good job limiting his chances but man, that girl has skill. Thankfully it wasn't enough this evening.

*His boy Malkin also played a good game, in a sneaky-good kind of way. He slipped through the Rangers D to pop up and get really good scoring chances. Good thing Hank was there to save the day.

*I know that I am going to sound like a broken record, and I know that some of you are going to wave his goal in my face, but Rozy has to sit a game. He has become virtually incompetent in the Rangers end. Thank goodness Staal has been there to bail him out most times. When Malik returns, we may not be so lucky.

*I mentioned Staal. Ours greatly outplayed theirs (who looked like he got hurt at one pojnt). Marc's little brother was serviceable this evening but Marc just played a fantastic game shutting down the Pens and making up for Rozy's mistakes.

*The last two games Tyutin and Girardi have played well but not as well as they had. Maybe it is because they are seeing more ice time than ever and are tired, or it is because they are now being matched against the opponent's top line so life is harder for them. But they have to step up, if only because Mara and Studwick are so bad.

*Ring a' ding ding, the Rangers rang a few off the iron this evening. It sucked that they didn't go in and make the game the blowout it should have been, but at least the Rangers were putting the puck on net.

*Speaking of such, Avery's one-timer goal was sweeeeeeeeet. Finally he made his swing more compact to get it off in the limited time he gets out there.

*You know, I bust on him quite a bit because he is not a physical deterrent and loses many of his fights, but Colton Orr played a good game. For that matter, so did the entire HBO line of Orr , Betts and Hollweg. HBO line ... just not the same without Jed being the O ...

*It was nice to win, but the Rangers caught the Pens playing on the second night of back-to-backs - much like the Isles caught us. They are professional athletes, but there really is no reason for games on consecutive nights. It isn't like its college and travel costs are prohibitive so they have to make the most of every trip.

*PHW Three Stars
3-Dubi - first NHL goal.
2-Gomez - goal and an assist.
1-Sean - goal and an assist.

Scotty Hockey Three Stars
3-Dubi - Yes Jagr is still getting points, but Dubi has really been the one creating chances on that line. It should be great to watch him as he continues to grow.
2-Hank - 26 saves and several were huge, especially since the D was quite porous.
1-Sean - For once I agree with the PHW ... Avery had a great game doing what he does best ...
