Musings on MSG's Renovation

Friend of the blog Patrick Hoffman wrote an article for TheGoodPoint.com and he asked me a six-pack of questions about the on-going Garden renovations. While some of my answers made his final article, I figured I would post the full monty here for your perusal.

1) Why do you think Madison Square Garden decided to do these renovations?

The short answer is because James Dolan is a businessman who likes to make money. The long answer is because Dolan was shortsighted and shot down the west-side Jets stadium. Once he did that, he slammed the door shut on Bloomberg and the rest of the NYC politicos and thus couldn't set up any kind of tax breaks or financial assistance for a new MSG. Without being able to build a new building, Dolan had to find other ways to raise long-term profits and a full renovation was the next-best thing. The old layout only had so much space for sushi bars and other trappings of the rich, corporate elite that Dolan hopes to attract more of. Yes, regular people enjoy sushi too, but not at hockey games.

2) When you first heard that the Garden would be undergoing renovations, what was your reaction? Why?

I was less than pleased, because I saw a dark future in it - a future where hardcore fans and children can't afford to go to games. A future where the Garden is as intimidating as the Air Canada Center in Toronto (which is not intimidating at all). A future where the team goes back to it's mercenary ways where they overpay for names to keep bringing in corporate clients. I was part of a focus group the Garden held with other season ticket holders. The third-party gentleman that they brought in to conduct the group asked a battery of questions, all along the line of 'what would make it alright for them to take your seat away and give you a worse one?' The answer, unanimously, was nothing. The fellow recommended an exclusive entrance to the building, some exclusive concession stands or minor discounts on said concessions. He was completely unable to grasp the concept that hardcore Ranger fans don't care about the accommodations or intermission entertainment options, they care about watching the game.

3) How do you think these renovations will end up benefiting Ranger fans at the game?

The renovations will make everything shinier and make it easier for fans to empty their wallet. There won't be any more limited view seats and there should be less congestion in the concourses during intermissions. There should be more of an impetus for Sather to build a winning team to justify the huge increases in cost but, looking at Toronto again, that won't necessarily be the case.

4) Do you think that their could be any negatives with these renovations? If so, what are they?

See my answer to number two. The Garden will be another vanilla building, albeit one even more full of tourists and businessmen endlessly talking on Blackberries while ignoring the action. Being a Ranger fan becomes more difficult the more they try to make going to games a luxury. In this day and age, what lower or even middle class families can afford to spend hundreds of dollars to go to a game? How many kids will ever get a chance to sit down low and see and feel the speed and power of live hockey, and thus become hooked on it? As great of a hockey city as New York is, the sport is not ingrained in people the way baseball and basketball is. Hockey is a big niche but a niche just the same. When you charge $60, 70 for nosebleeds, how many of the blue collar fans will bring the wife and kids to several games a season? Not many. They will sit at home and watch it on television, where it becomes just another program - like Jersey Shore or American Idol (and with Joe Micheletti doing analysis, just as obnoxious). It is just another case of eroding your long-term fanbase in exchange for a short-term money grab.

5) As someone who attends the Garden to watch hockey, how do you think the renovations will enhance your viewing experience?

Enhance my experience? Not at all. They may add some convenience as there will be less crowds to fight through towards the increased number of bathrooms and concessions. As a Garden regular after the lockout (when I finally had the money to be), I rarely had problems with the crowds. Like many of the other season ticket folks, I learned the best ways, means and timing to get everything I wanted. And, it must be said that those wants are not many outside of seeing the game. A pregame pretzel, maybe a beer and a stop at the bathroom (after said beer). In fact, the renovations will actually detract from the viewing experience as there will be less hardcore fans to commiserate with, less fans to make noise with and less chance I will be able to afford to go in the future.

6) Any other thoughts you'd like to share regarding the renovations and how it relates to the Rangers?

Dolan and O'Neil and the rest of the Garden brass are doing what they need to do to increase revenues and help maintain the building's standing as the self-proclaimed World's Most Famous Arena. I understand that. But, in doing so, the characteristics that have helped make the place one of the most intimidating, interesting and unique in all of the world are being stripped away. The building is stepping further from the gritty Garden and more towards personality-free corporate cleanliness. It is not entirely unlike Disney taking over Times Square and making it 'safe': it is business- and tourist-friendly but it has no personality.

This transformation is important to New York given that The Garden, much like the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and Central Park, is part of the fabric of New York. We are pleased that our construction manager, Turner Construction, has advised us that the renovation will involve more than 2.6 million man hours of union labor, the equivalent of at least 1,300 full-time equivalent jobs, and will create as many as 3,700 union construction jobs.

Moving forward we will offer you a host of resources, including regular communications, informational events and interactive online tools regarding the highly anticipated renovation of The Garden to ensure that you are fully informed as progress continues. If you go to MSG.com/transformation, select renderings of the transformed Garden are available to view.

Thank you for your support and commitment to the New York Rangers, we look forward to seeing you at The Garden in the fall.

Sincerely,

Hank Ratner
President & CEO
Madison Square Garden
Quick analysis: Garden brass doesn't realize that the best way to maximize revenues is to improve the performance of the teams that are the main attraction. Those teams are the main attraction, NOT the building they play in - no matter how much you tout how famous it is. Most fans would come down to watch the Rangers play in a barn or the Knicks play in a cage - location doesn't matter, the team does. Typical corporate thinking by them, missing the big picture as always.

Gotta Love The Rangers

The day after the trade deadline, before the 'new-look' team has even stepped on the ice, I got this in my e-mail:

And the best part of it is that they are raping us fans yet again. My season tickets, located in section 329, cost $52 each for a regular season game. For the first round that price is going up to $85!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is a 63% increase by my math. Are you kidding me???? Second round is $92, third is $125 and should the Rangers make the Cup (ha ha ha) my $52 seat goes up to $184 per game. I could only imagine what they are charging for the folks closer to the ice. Oh, and they are charging $25 to mail the tickets to your home. Perhaps the tickets come with the lube, making the package heavier - increasing shipping costs. For those curious, here was my rant about playoff ticket costs last season. Comparing the two, the Garden sees that they need to make the money earlier, thus the higher first round ticket prices.

The utter and complete disregard for the lifeblood of the franchise is disgusting. But then again, we should have expected it from Dolan. And Gary Bettman allows this to go on. For shame. And, of course, I am going to buy the tickets (minus the shipping, I'll pick them up, k? thx). So who is the stupid one here?

Dammit.

I've Seen The Future, And It's Expensive

The Rangers finally sent out their invoices for season tickets Wednesday and they give subscribers 20 days to send in their payments, lest they lose their seats.

Ticket prices for the 2008-09 season have, of course, gone up. I have two seats in section 329 and they will cost me $52 per seat per game. That is up six bucks from last season, 10 from the season before and 12 from the first season out of the lockout (which was four cheaper than the year prior). Now $52 is not quite the extravagant cost from the first round of last year's playoffs - $75 - but it is still a significant raise ... and for what?

The ticket costs, which you can pay outright or over a six-month pay plan, cover 43 games. As the Rangers are losing a regular season home game to Prague, that means that they are forcing you to pay full price for three preseason games. As many subscribers have experienced, if you can't attend those games, it is virtually impossible to resell them for cost so you are instantly losing money. And, being as the Rangers are playing two preseason games in Switzerland, you can be assured not to see the actual New York Rangers. The good part about that is that every prospect, every free agent, everyone will get a chance to show their stuff before the real games begin. That is great for hockey geeks like me but terrible for ticket resale value. And, believe it or not, members of the Rangers season subscription office are recommending resale to recoup costs as they understand the position that they are putting fans.

Even if you think that the moves that Sather and company made last week were good ones (I don't), you should be prepared for the worst out of the gate. There will be eight preseason games, two in Switzerland and then the two season-opening games in Prague ... all of that travel sets this team up to struggle right off of the bat. The Olympic break doomed the 2006 squad because it came right in the middle of the year - by the time they faced the Devils, the main players had already played seven, eight more games than their competitors while flying to and from Italy. One can only hope that this group of guys will be able to recover over the long grind that will come once they return from their Eurotrip. But I wouldn't bet on it ...

Another question worth asking is that jet lag or not, will the 2008-09 Rangers be worth watching? The personality of the Rangers is gone - no Shanny, no Avery, no Jagr. Markus Naslund and Wade Redden are both mild mannered a la Chris Drury. And while a guy like Aaron Voros is sure to make some waves with his physical play, he can't infuriate the way Sean did. The new Rangers are a more generic, vanilla squad and yet the front office is charging you more to watch them.

I, for one, am hoping that there are enough gullible people in New York willing to pay big bucks for bad hockey because it looks like it will get rough, and quickly. They can have all of the number retirements and honoured numbers they want, but if this team doesn't play better than it looks on paper, they will be in trouble in terms of fans. Should they miss the playoffs, then they will surely see a large ticketholder turnover next summer, when they are certainly going to raise costs again to start paying for the MSG renovation.

It is New York so it is almost assured that the team will be able to get whatever price it wants, but it is just sad that the diehard fans are slowly being priced out. The atmosphere suffers and MSG will cease to be one of the best places to watch hockey in the NHL. It has become a much more corporate building over the last 20 years and when you take the personality of the fans out, and let the players with personality go, what do you have left?

Not something worth $52 a game, that's for sure ...

Advertising, Advertising, Advertising

As many of you may have seen, the Sports-Reference folks have gone live with their hockey site to rival the long-standard Hockeydb. It was a good move by them as Hockeydb, while reliable, added annoying pop-up advertising while their site will not. Instead, Hockey-Reference has page sponsorships. Venerable hockey blogger James Mirtle alerted everyone with a post and set off a feeding frenzy. And, of course, I had to get in on it myself.

Scotty Hockey is now the proud sponsor of three pages for a year: one of my all-time favourite players in Joey Kocur, Marek Malik (self explanatory there) and Brandon Dubinsky. I grabbed Dubi as he is truly a rising star for the Blueshirts. Of course, I also did it at five a.m. or so. And thus, the best tag line I could come up with was "May 2007-08 be the first of many solid seasons as a Blueshirts centerman for Brandon ..."

So here is where you guys come in. Much like with what (that bastard who stole Sean Avery) Greg over at Yahoo! (j/k Greg) is doing for Chris Pronger, I would like you to put your ideas in the comments and I will replace mine with the best of the bunch. So get to it!

Advertising, Advertising, Advertising: The Evolution of Marketing in the Digital Age

In today's fast-paced and interconnected world, advertising is everywhere. From the billboards lining our highways to the pop-up ads that appear while browsing the internet, advertising has become an integral part of our daily lives. But how did we get here? This article will explore the evolution of advertising, from its humble beginnings to the digital age, and answer some frequently asked questions (FAQs) along the way.

FAQ 1: What Is Advertising?

Advertising is a form of communication that aims to persuade an audience to take action. This action can vary from purchasing a product, supporting a cause, or simply raising awareness. Advertising can take many forms, including print ads, radio and TV commercials, online ads, social media campaigns, and more.

FAQ 2: When Did Advertising Begin?

The history of advertising dates back thousands of years. One of the earliest recorded advertisements is a carved stone tablet from ancient Egypt that promoted a reward for a runaway slave. In ancient Greece, town criers were employed to announce public events and sales. However, modern advertising as we know it began to take shape during the Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries with the rise of newspapers and magazines.

FAQ 3: How Has Advertising Evolved Over Time?

Advertising has evolved significantly over the years, driven by advancements in technology, changes in consumer behavior, and shifts in the media landscape. Here are some key milestones:

Radio and Television: The introduction of radio in the early 20th century and later television brought new advertising opportunities. Brands began creating jingles and commercials to reach a wider audience.

Digital Age: The advent of the internet transformed advertising. Banner ads, email marketing, and search engine optimization (SEO) became essential tools for businesses.

Social Media: Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube have revolutionized advertising. Targeted ads, influencer marketing, and viral campaigns have become the norm.

Mobile Advertising: As smartphones became ubiquitous, mobile advertising surged. Apps, location-based marketing, and mobile video ads have become prevalent.

Programmatic Advertising: Automation and data-driven targeting have given rise to programmatic advertising, allowing advertisers to reach specific audiences with precision.

FAQ 4: Is Advertising Effective?

The effectiveness of advertising varies depending on many factors, including the quality of the ad, the relevance to the target audience, and the timing of the campaign. Successful advertising can lead to increased brand awareness, higher sales, and a strong return on investment (ROI). However, not all ads achieve these goals, and some may even backfire if not executed properly.

FAQ 5: What Are Some Notable Advertising Campaigns?

There have been countless memorable advertising campaigns over the years. Here are a few iconic examples:

"Got Milk?" – This campaign encouraged milk consumption by highlighting the consequences of running out of milk in everyday situations.

Coca-Cola's "Share a Coke" – Coca-Cola replaced its logo with popular names, encouraging people to share a Coke with friends and family.

Apple's "1984" – Apple's Super Bowl ad in 1984 introduced the Macintosh computer and is considered one of the greatest ads of all time.

Nike's "Just Do It" – This campaign has been running for decades, inspiring athletes and consumers to pursue their goals fearlessly.

FAQ 6: How Has Advertising Adapted to Privacy Concerns?

In recent years, concerns about privacy and data collection have prompted changes in advertising practices. Laws like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) have given consumers more control over their data. Advertisers are now required to obtain consent before collecting and using personal information for targeting.

Advertising has come a long way since its inception in ancient civilizations. It has adapted and evolved alongside changes in technology and consumer behavior. In today's digital age, advertising is more sophisticated and targeted than ever before. While it continues to be a powerful tool for businesses and organizations, it also faces challenges related to privacy and consumer trust. As advertising continues to evolve, it will be fascinating to see how marketers navigate these complex landscapes while striving to capture the attention and hearts of their audiences.

$ Money, Money, Muhnayyyyyyy $

For those that haven't heard, MSG has released the pricing structure for playoff tickets. For my seats in Section 329, which are normally $46 a piece, they will go up to $75, $90, $125 and $200 in each of the four rounds of the playoffs. As I have two seats, should we get home advantage through the playoffs (which we won't), the total cost would be $3,925. That is about $500 cheaper than the cost of the entire regular season and preseason (which they force you to buy) ... that's 16 games for the about the price of 42.

There are some things to keep in mind: like Ranger reporter Sam Weinman said, you have to make the playoffs first and the way Hank has played recently, there is some question. But, as I said before, we won't have home ice so that's at least one game back per round, or $960. Three grand is an awful lot of money, but lets face it: its the playoffs in New York, of course its expensive.

Fans are crying out how insane the price jump is, but prices are even worse in Toronto for Maple Leaf fans where tickets are sky high for regular season games. Thankfully for them, they don't have to pay for the playoffs since their team never makes it anymore, so we can't compare second-season prices. People are also forgetting that tickets at the decrepit cesspool that is the Mausoleum are more expensive than the Garden at certain levels. That will of course change - probably around the time the new MSG opens - but by that time these inflated playoff prices will be cheap for even regular season tickets.

Ever since Bettman had owners lower prices coming out of the lockout, costs have dramatically gone up. I just am not shocked in the least since salaries are basically back to where they were before 2004 and are going ever higher, salary cap or not. For whatever lip service Bettman and the owners game to thanking the fans for their loyalty during the lockout, if you actually believed they cared about you or me then you are sadly mistaken. Just like the proprietors of any businesses, they care about the bottom line and would say whatever it took to keep us shelling out our money for their product. They made nice and it worked, people came back.

I just find it hard to believe the amount of outcry that I am hearing. How are Ranger fans crying foul now? How did they not see the writing on the wall when the insane long term deals were given to Gomez and Drury, not to mention the extension that was handed to Lundqvist last month? Dolan has to sign those paychecks and he sure as hell isn't going to dip into his trust fund to pay for them.

He doesn't care that the True Blue fans are kept away from the games. The type of person in the seat doesn't matter in the least as long as there is a person in the seat. He knows as well as you do that the diehards will do whatever they can, pay whatever they can to come to the games. And if they can't? This is New York, someone else will buy their ticket. There are eight million people in this city, plus tourists, and only 18,200 seats Dolan's minions can sell. He will continue to jack up the prices until those seats go empty, which likely won't happen anytime soon.

So what does it come down to? Suck it up. This is a case where the pessimist in me was proven right and I, for one, am not the least bit shocked to be proven right. What can you say? I mean, cest la vie - such is life. Businessmen care about making money, not making nice. You and I will keep paying as long as we can afford to. After we will just have to watch the games on tv and listen to Joe Michaletti every night.

Oh god ...

Money, Money, Muhnayyyyyyy - A Deep Dive into the Economics of Professional Sports

In the world of professional sports, money plays a pivotal role at every level. From the salaries of athletes to the revenue generated by teams and leagues, finances are a constant topic of discussion and debate. In this article, we will take a comprehensive look at the economics of professional sports, exploring how money is earned, spent, and distributed across various sports and leagues.

FAQ 1: How Do Professional Sports Leagues Generate Revenue?

Professional sports leagues generate revenue through multiple channels:

Television Contracts: Broadcast rights agreements with networks are a significant source of income. These contracts grant networks exclusive rights to televise games and events, leading to substantial payouts for the leagues.

Ticket Sales: Ticket sales for games and events are another primary revenue stream. Teams sell tickets to fans who attend games in person, and prices can vary widely based on the popularity of the sport and the team's performance.

Merchandise Sales: The sale of team merchandise, including jerseys, hats, and memorabilia, contributes significantly to revenue. Fan loyalty and brand appeal drive merchandise sales.

Sponsorships and Advertising: Professional teams often partner with corporate sponsors who pay for advertising space in stadiums, on jerseys, and during broadcasts.

Licensing: Licensing agreements allow leagues and teams to earn money by granting the use of their logos and branding on products, video games, and more.

Digital Streaming: With the rise of digital platforms, leagues have increasingly turned to streaming services and online content to reach a global audience.

FAQ 2: How Are Athletes Compensated?

Athletes' compensation varies widely based on factors like the sport, level of play, and individual performance:

Salaries: In many team sports, athletes receive salaries as part of their contracts. These salaries can range from modest amounts for lower-tier leagues to multi-million-dollar contracts in top professional leagues.

Bonuses: Athletes often earn performance-based bonuses for achievements such as winning championships, achieving statistical milestones, or earning awards.

Endorsements: Many athletes secure lucrative endorsement deals with companies looking to capitalize on their popularity and image. Endorsement earnings can surpass their playing salaries.

Prize Money: In individual sports like tennis and golf, athletes compete for prize money, which can be substantial for major tournaments.

Appearance Fees: Some athletes receive appearance fees for participating in events, exhibitions, or promotional activities.

FAQ 3: How Is Revenue Distributed Within Leagues?

Revenue distribution within leagues can vary depending on league policies and collective bargaining agreements:

Revenue Sharing: Some leagues employ revenue-sharing systems, where a portion of revenue is distributed evenly among teams to maintain competitive balance.

Luxury Tax: In leagues like the NBA, teams that exceed a certain salary cap threshold pay a luxury tax, which is then distributed among teams that stay within the cap.

Gate Receipts: Teams often retain a significant portion of gate receipts, but a portion may be shared with the league.

National TV Revenue: National television revenue is typically shared among all teams in a league, providing a more equitable distribution.

FAQ 4: The Impact of COVID-19 on Sports Economics

The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on professional sports:

Loss of Revenue: With games played without fans or postponed, leagues and teams suffered substantial revenue losses, affecting player salaries, team budgets, and league operations.

Digital Transformation: The pandemic accelerated the shift to digital platforms, with leagues and teams investing in streaming services and digital content to engage fans and generate revenue.

Labor Agreements: Negotiations between players' unions and leagues led to temporary changes in salary caps and revenue-sharing arrangements to navigate the financial challenges posed by the pandemic.

: Money's Role in the Game

Money is an integral part of professional sports, influencing everything from player contracts to fan experiences. The economics of sports are complex, and the financial health of leagues, teams, and athletes relies on a delicate balance between revenue generation and expenditure management.

As we continue to witness the ever-evolving landscape of professional sports, it's clear that the pursuit of money, whether through broadcast deals, sponsorships, or merchandise sales, will remain a driving force behind the industry's growth and transformation. Understanding the financial aspects of sports enriches our appreciation of the games we love, reminding us that in the world of sports, money truly makes the world go 'round.
